PONTE VEDRA BEACH — Wyndham Clark pulled out of the Players Championship late on Friday.
Clark, who came agonizingly close to a playoff at TPC Sawgrass last year, was seen shaking hands with competitors Jordan Spieth and Danny Walker before the group turned to the second nine. The reason for the WD was not immediately clear, although was noted on the board as Spieth and Walker reached the 10th tee.
At the time of the WD, Clark had turned in a four-over 40 on the front side after an opening-round 72. According to Data Golf, the project cut is at one under, meaning Clark would have needed a five-under 31 on the back to make the weekend.
Clark entered the week ranked eighth in the Official World Golf Ranking, but since contending at the 2024 Players (which followed a win at Pebble Beach and a close call at Bay Hill) he has been in a slump of sorts.
“It’s funny how you have success and you win a major you win some tournaments and then everyone expects you to do that all the time,” Clark said earlier this week. “Scottie [Scheffler] is doing that all the time, and it’s very impressive, but no one else is really doing that.
“It’s kind of put some undue pressure, I feel like, on me specifically because if I went and I made all four cuts in the majors and contended one time, that’s actually not that bad, or if I missed three of the cuts and finished fourth at one of the majors, I would have taken that three years ago.”
