Redford Township police are investigating a drive-by shooting Thursday night they said left a man wounded.
Officers were called at about 7 p.m. to the area of Eight Mile Road and Centralia Street near Beech-Daly for a report of a shooting and a vehicle crash, according to authorities.
They arrived and found an unoccupied vehicle with bullet holes in it, police said in a statement.
Officers were told a victim who had been injured was taken to a hospital by a witness while police were en route.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was alone in his vehicle when a suspect in a dark-colored SUV fired more than 20 rounds at him.
Detectives said the suspect fled the scene, and the victim was struck by rounds that resulted in three non-fatal wounds, which caused him to crash his vehicle.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about the incident should call Redford Police Det. Ed French at (313) 387-2579 or email [email protected]. Tips may also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) SPEAK-UP.
Media reports and Detroit city officials said the wounded victim is Detroit rapper Skilla Baby.
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield issued a statement Friday and said her prayers are with him and his family for a speedy recovery.
“Earlier today, Treyvon ‘Skilla Baby’ Gardner was the victim of a drive-by shooting,” she said. “By the grace of God, he has survived this attempt to take his life and is recovering in a local hospital. As a city, we will not tolerate the wanton disregard of life and the law and we will bring those responsible to justice.”
Sheffield added: “Skilla Baby has used his platform to partner with our respective offices to promote peace through a Gun Buy Back Program and encourage children to stay in school. Additionally, he has donated his money and time for toy and bike giveaways and to help Detroiters expunge their records. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery and will be able to continue his efforts to be a positive force in Detroit.”
Last year, Skilla Baby was named part of XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class of 2024.
