Hours before his home debut at Citizens Bank Park, Phillies pitcher Jesús Luzardo announced a new initiative to benefit youth in need in Philadelphia. Benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, Luzardo will donate $100 for every strikeout he records in the 2025 season.

The initiative, “Striking out Barriers,” will turn strikeouts into potential opportunities for the youth of Philadelphia.

“Every strikeout now has a greater purpose,” said Luzardo. “And I hope we can rally support to help more kids get the opportunities they deserve.”

Born in Peru, Luzardo grew up in Parkland, Fla., about an hour outside of Miami. When he was traded to Miami from Oakland, he returned home and immediately got involved in his hometown. Luzardo, who was actively involved in Miami through his Luzardo Family Foundation, supported programs like WOW Center Miami, Arc Broward, Boys & Girls Club, and Challenger Little League. He even hosts a free youth clinic every offseason for the kids of Parkland at his Stoneman Douglas High School, his alma mater. Now, in a new city, Luzardo has committed to continue supporting causes close to his heart.

Averaging a little under 100 strikeouts per season, Luzardo will likely donate around $10,000 through this cause to Philadelphia youth.

Organizationally and as individual players, the Phillies support countless causes in the community. His efforts join a long line of work from his new teammates. Aaron Nola hosted a bowling event in the past, and now a poker tournament supporting Team Red, White, & Blue. Kyle Schwarber is constantly in the community with Schwarber’s Neighborhood Heroes, helping first responders, military personnel, and their families. J.T. Realmuto was recently on a trip with International Justice Mission’s Team Freedom.

No matter the cause, seeing professional athletes give back in any amount is always an impactful sight and one that might encourage us all to consider how we can support one another.
