Bosch: Legacy’s Replacement Show Gets First Trailer Ahead of Spinoff Lead’s Debut in Series Finale

Prime Video has dropped the first teaser trailer for Ballard, the next series in the streamer’s Bosch franchise. The teaser’s arrival comes ahead of Maggie Q’s debut as the title character in the series finale of Bosch: Legacy this Thursday.

“A new chapter in the world of Bosch begins with Ballard. Introducing Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, coming this summer to Prime Video,” wrote Prime Video in the caption for the trailer, revealing the release window for the hotly-anticipated spinoff. A second expansion of the streamer’s Bosch franchise was first reported to be in the works in 2023, with Maggie Q coming on board the spinoff in March 2024 as Detective Renée Ballard, who was introduced in Michael Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show. While Ballard will conclude the franchise’s era of shows titled after Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch, the fan-favorite character isn’t going anywhere, as the teaser below ends with him asking to speak with Ballard.

In the upcoming spinoff, Ballard takes on the gargantuan task of running the LAPD’s cold case division. Described as underfunded, with volunteer staff, this is the largest caseload in the city. When Ballard uncovers a larger conspiracy at play, she’ll turn to retired ally Harry Bosch to navigate the dangers threatening her life and unit. Starring alongside Q in the series will be American Horror Story alum John Carroll Lynch in the role of Thomas Laffont, a retired detective and former partner of Ballard’s.

Maggie Q Will Debut as Ballard in Bosch: Legacy

Bosch fans will first be introduced to Q’s Ballard in the series finale of Bosch: Legacy, although exact details as to the character’s inclusion in the episode have yet to be fully shared. The third and final season of Legacy adapted Connelly’s best-selling novels Desert Star (2022) and The Black Ice (1993).

The synopsis for Bosch: Legacy Season 3 reads as follows: “The murder investigation of Kurt Dockweiler brings dangerous secrets to light and threatens to ruin the lives of our three principal characters. The disappearance of a family haunts Harry Bosch and forces him to confront the limits of justice. In a hotly contested race, Honey “Money” Chandler is poised to become the next District Attorney of Los Angeles. And Maddie Bosch gets entangled in a series of violent follow-home robberies.”

Welliver’s return as Bosch in Ballard will likely please fans who are not quite ready to say goodbye to the character after 10 years. Legacy‘s cancelation even surprised Welliver, who revealed earlier this month that there had “already been in conversations midway towards the end of the season talking about the next season and ideas [for Season 4], and we were getting very excited about the prospect. I got a call from them, and they said they’re not going forward.”

While Welliver could end up being too busy to reprise Bosch on a major basis if his potential The Equalizer spinoff moves forward at CBS, the actor seems open to appearing in whatever capacity is needed should Ballard last beyond its first season. He recently told CBR that he would play Bosch “for another 10 or 20 [years] or whatever, until it just was ridiculous.”

The final two episodes of Bosch: Legacy drop on Prime Video on Apr. 17, while Ballard is set to premiere on the streamer this summer.
