‘Bosch: Legacy’s Titus Welliver Breaks Down Renée Ballard’s Series Finale Introduction (Exclusive)

The final two episodes of Bosch: Legacy begin streaming today. In Episode 10, “Big Dawn,” Harry (Titus Welliver) meets Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) for the first time when she tails him back to his Hollywood office and demands that he return the case books he stole on the “Flower Girl” murders. This sets up the spinoff Ballard series, which will be the next Prime Video show in the Michael Connelly franchise.

It turns out that Harry, of course, didn’t steal the murder books, but made a copy of them . Even though he retired from the LAPD, this was a case that haunted him. Keeping in line with his “everybody counts or nobody counts” motto, he had hoped to continue working to solve them.

When Ballard shows up and accuses him of theft, he realizes that since she’s part of LAPD RHD (Robbery Homicide Division), something must have triggered her interest, like a new murder. So, he uses the fact that he has something she needs to leverage himself into the investigation even though he receives a lot of resistance.

“They intersect and they end up having to work together, reluctantly,” Welliver tells Parade. “What I will say is that Maggie and I have a million friends in common. But [we] have never met each other nor worked together. And I’m happy to report that when we met, the chemistry was there, it really worked. Every aspect of it worked. She’s fantastic as Ballard. I rang my bell when they were talking about her. I went, ‘Oh, if you can get her, that’s a homerun.’”

The Flower Girl murders have been a cold case for about a dozen years when the episode begins, so it’s a hard case to solve. But Harry is adamant that he wants to work it out before another victim of the serial killer is found. Renée is told by her bosses to keep him at a distance. But Harry being Harry, he ignores her and calls on Mo (Stephen A Chang) for his technical expertise to help him, and they run afoul of Renée – at first.

“Maggie’s exceptional in the role, and she really gets it,” Welliver continues. “There’s a tone in the Bosch canon that needs to be adhered to to a certain degree, and she got Renée immediately. I think our experiences were not dissimilar. She read that character and went, “I know who she is. I know how I want to play her.’”

Despite the fact that in the Michael Connelly Renée Ballard books, Harry works with her in the cold case division of the LAPD, Welliver says he is not going to be part of the spinoff show.

“We had a marvelous time working together and I’m very excited for her show to come out, very excited for the audience,” Welliver says. “The thing is, for the fans of the books, they’ve been wanting Ballard to come into Harry’s orbit. People on social media have been saying for years, ‘Is Renée Ballard ever going to show up?’ That’s now been fully realized, so I’m extremely excited about that.”

What Welliver is going to be a part of is The Equalizer spinoff, which will air on CBS on April 20 as the backdoor pilot episode, “Sins of the Father.” The tune-in information reads: McCall (Queen Latifah) is contacted by Samantha Reed (Juani Feliz), whose father, ex-CIA agent Elijah Reed (Welliver), is missing. While Samantha joins forces with the Equalizer team to track down the agency legend, she learns more about her family’s past in the Dominican Republic.

“I had a blast doing it,” Welliver says. “Juani is a marvelous actor. She’s great, and it was really wonderful to finally get to work with Latifah, who I’ve known for a long time. I love that show; it’s just fun. I loved the original version with Edward Woodward, I loved the films, I love what Latifah does with McCall.”
