LIVE UPDATES: ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Panel at ‘Star Wars’ Celebration Japan

Good morning from Star Wars Celebration Japan! Enjoy our moment by moment recap below of this morning’s The Mandalorian and Grogu Panel.

10.05 – Panel kicks off.

10.07 – Leia’s message from A New Hope plays on the screen.

10.08 – A video with footage from all shows and movies plays.

10.11 – R2-D2 and C-3PO walk out speaking Japanese.

10.12 – Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy walk out on stage. Everyone gets to their feet.

10.13 – Kathleen Kennedy thanks “the best fans in the galaxy” and the teams in Tokyo, San Francisco, and Los Angeles that collaborated to bring the event to life.

10.14 – Kathleen Kennedy: “We’re currently in development of numerous feature films from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg, and of course one from you Dave [Filoni], but before we get to The Mandalorian and Grogu, we have another film we’d like to talk about.”

10.15 – Shawn Levy walks out.

10.16 – Shawn Levy: “With the help of Kathy, Dave, and Carrie Beck we developed a story. This is a Star Wars movie we’re making this fall.”

10.17 – It’s a standalone adventure that takes place a few years after Episode IX.

10.18 – There are many rumors, some true, some not.

10.18 – RYAN GOSLING IN THE HOUSE.

10.20 – Ryan Gosling shows his Star Wars bedsheets from when he was five.

10.21 – Gosling on what drew him to Star Wars: He was dreaming about Star Wars before he even saw the film. “The reality is the script is so good and it has such a great story with great and original characters and filled with so much heart and adventure. There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

10.21 – Levy: “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure with new characters.”

10.22 – The movie comes out May 28, 2027.

10.24 – Kathleen Kennedy: “Don’t you have a starfighter to catch?” Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling bow out.

10.25 – The Mandalorian and Grogu title plays on the screen.

10.26 – Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni walk out.

10.27 – Favreau speaks of the importance of Japan to Star Wars storytelling.

10.28 – Multiple pictures from the production play on the screen.

10.32 – Favreau: “We have more people we’d like to have here.” Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal walk out.

10.35 – Picture of Sigourney Weaver in a fighter pilot costume plays on screen. Another one with Jon Favreau.

10.36 – Sigourney Weaver says she hadn’t seen The Mandalorian, but after doing so, she fell in love with the show, Pedro Pascal, and Grogu.

10.37 – Favreau carries Grogu out.

10.37 – “There’s only way to top this. We gotta show them some footage.”

10.38 – A picture of Pedro Pascal in costume plays.

10.39 – It’s the last Star Wars Celebration before the movie.

10.40 – We saw two minutes of footage. A one-minute scene shot as one take with Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin blasting his way through the cockpit of a walker. Then, a one-minute teaser featuring Zeb and Grogu swimming, and with one final shot of (presumably) Rotta the Hutt, from the back, inside a colosseum.
