Psychologist discusses how parents can cope with anxiety and stress in the wake of FSU shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The shooting at Florida State University that left two people dead and six others injured on Thursday has reignited concerns and even panic over safety on college campuses across the nation.

Hearing the news about the campus shooting at FSU has parents’ hearts and minds racing, causing anxiety and panic, whether their son or daughter attended FSU or another college miles away.

So, how can parents talk with their college-aged students about safety? How do they let them know they worry about them? How can they know if they have their own fears?

Dr. Tracy Packiam, an award-winning psychologist and author, joined News4JAX Anchor Bruce Hamilton on The Morning Show to discuss coping with the psychological stresses of a mass shooting at a school.

According to officials, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested after he was accused of opening fire and shooting multiple people around 11:50 a.m. near the student union.

Two people were killed and six others were injured in the shooting, officials said in a news conference Thursday evening. Police said the two men who died were not students, but no other victim information was immediately released.

The motive remained unclear as of Friday morning.
