DALLAS — The news that a teenager was shot at Dallas ISD’s Wilmer-Hutchins High School Monday, according to officials, has reverberated to the Texas Capitol.
Officials began responding to the shooting at the high school in the 5500 block of Langdon Road off I-20 in southeast Dallas shortly after 1 p.m. A student had been injured in a shooting at the same school just about a year ago.
Later Monday afternoon, State Rep. Aicha Davis, D-Dallas, who represents the area in the Texas House, discussed the shooting on the House floor.
“I humbly ask for prayers for those students, the families, the staff at the schools, the first responders and everybody else who’s going to be affected by this,” Davis said.
Then, House Speaker Dustin Burrows called for a moment of silence.
At the city level, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said he was “deeply troubled to learn about the shooting.
“Our schools should never be places of violence. I’m grateful to the @DallasPD and @DallasFireRes_q for their swift response to this situation,” Johnson wrote in a post on X.

Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkns, who represents the area on the city council, called Monday a “sad day for DISD.”
Atkins, from the scene of the shooting, also discussed the security implications of the shooting.
“I think that you cannot overpolice anything. You cannot overpolice a student,” Atkins told WFAA. “When you enter a building — you have some weak spot in any kind of secured building, you know, that someone can let someone in the building. Someone you think you might know, someone you think you don’t know.”
At the national level, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett said she was “heartbroken to learn of yet another shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School — nearly one year after the last.”
“My prayers are with the students, teachers, and families who are once again forced to live through this nightmare,” Crockett said. “No child should fear for their life at school. No teacher should have to barricade a classroom door. Let me be clear: this is not normal. This is not acceptable. Guns do not belong in our schools. Every student deserves to learn in a safe environment.”
Crockett said her office is in contact with Dallas ISD regarding the incident.
