Former Syracuse basketball standout set to make amateur boxing debut

Syracuse, N.Y. — Former Syracuse basketball standout Michael Carter-Williams is stepping into the ring.

Carter-Williams is scheduled to make his amateur boxing debut next month in New York, the fight’s promoter said in a news release.

The fight is part of the Broad Street Brawl, set to be held May 29 at the Léman Ballroom in New York City.

The fight card is organized by Uprising Promotions, a company founded in 2013 by former professional boxer Ronson Frank.

“We are excited to have someone of Michael Carter-Williams’ caliber on the show,” Frank said in a statement.

“You do not get to the top of the game like he did in basketball without being a seriously hard worker, so I am curious to see how his athletic ability transitions into boxing.”

Frank said the event will raise funds for Bigvision Community, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young adults in recovery from substance abuse.

Boxing is the latest post-basketball endeavor for Carter-Williams.

He joined ESPN this past season as a men’s college basketball studio and game analyst and is part of an ownership group with actor-singer Donnie Wahlberg that is trying to bring a WNBA team to Boston.

A member of the Orange’s 2013 Final Four team, Carter-Williams was selected 11th overall in that year’s draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, where he won NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Carter-Williams, 33, spent nine seasons in the NBA, with other playing stints with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks.
