Ahead of the new league year, the Los Angeles Rams let Cooper Kupp, a former Super Bowl MVP and a triple-crown receiver, know that he is going to be released for cap relief. Kupp will now enter free agency for the first time as a 31-year-old with 634 receptions, 7,776 receiving yards and 57 receiving touchdowns under his belt.
Despite never playing more than 12 games in the three seasons following his triple crown, teams will still have interest in Kupp. One of those teams, according to two reports, is the Green Bay Packers.
Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team mentioned the Packers “among several teams” who are interested in the receiver while reporter Aaron Wilson stated that the Packers, Seahawks and Titans “make a lot of sense as fits” for the pass-catcher. Wilson later added,” Green Bay is one to watch.”
NFL Network’s Peter Schrager’s reporting seems to fall in line with the teams Wilson rattled off on Wednesday. Schrager stated that three teams are interested in Kupp’s services, but the question is about his cost and how many snaps he believes he can play at his asking price.
At the moment, the Packers are down a receiver in their rotation after the loss of Christian Watson, who will miss the first three months of the regular season with an ACL injury. With Green Bay’s roster in a pretty good spot, beyond receiver, defensive end and defensive tackle, this could be a swing the team actually takes.
It’s worth noting that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was Kupp’s offensive coordinator in the receiver’s rookie season with the Rams. Matt’s brother, Mike LaFleur, was Kupp’s offensive coordinator the last two seasons in Los Angeles.
