TAYLORSVILLE, Miss. (WLBT) – First responders are still trying to assess damage in Taylorsville after the first round of violent storms ripped through the area.
“It came across Highway 37 at the county Line. It looks like it got the southeastern part of the town,” said Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston.
Houston said he was about five miles out of the town when he spoke to WLBT. Many of the roads going into the community were blocked by downed trees. He said four deputies were already in the town assisting with the response.

Jimmy Burns, director of the Smith County Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that homes had been damaged there, but was not sure how many.
Crews were still bracing for another storm cell about to come through the area around 2:50 p.m.
Meanwhile, damage is also being reported in Sharkey and Issaquena counties.
Sharkey County Deputy EMA Director Natalie Perkins tells 3 On Your Side that at least 12 homes were damaged in Issaquena, as well as several farms. One home was damaged in Sharkey.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is asking drivers in Issaquena County to exercise caution as crews clear roads in the Grace area.
According to law enforcement, power lines went down along Highway 1 after a tornado touched down.
No injuries have been reported so far.
