COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Today is a First Alert Weather Day for the potential of heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible severe weather across the Midlands.

A tornado watch has been issued for Lexington, Richland, Kershaw, Lee, Sumter, Calhoun, Orangeburg, and Clarendon Counties until 2pm. This means the environment is conducive for tornadic development. First Alert Summary

A warm, breezy night is on tap ahead of a storm system will will arrive to the Midlands Sunday morning. Winds gusts through the night could be up to 25-30 MPH out of the southeast. A Lake Wind Advisory is now in effect for the high wind gusts until 8 PM Sunday evening. This will keep temperatures mild in the middle 60s as clouds increase overhead.

A First Alert Weather Day is in place today for the likelihood of impactful weather. An incoming cold front will usher in a line of rain, winds, and storms to the Midlands in the morning. This batch of storms will also feature the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms. Damaging wind gusts would be the main concern with strong storms, but a tornado cannot be ruled out. All of the area is under a ‘Slight 2/5 Risk’ for the storm threat. The main timeframe for this threat will be between 5 AM through 2 PM tomorrow. Skies will clear out by the afternoon with winds staying breezy behind the front.

In the wake of the front, temperatures will cool off on Monday to kick off the new week. Highs are expected to top out in the middle 60s with a mostly sunny sky.

Another quick warm-up to the 70s looks likely by Tuesday and Wednesday of the upcoming week. Another brief drop in temperatures back to the 60s is forecast to arrives by Thursday.

Sunday (First Alert Weather Day): Widespread showers and storms, mainly in the morning. Severe weather possible. Highs in the low and mid 70s.

St. Patrick’s Day: Turning cooler with highs in the middle 60s.

Tuesday: Temperatures in the lower 70s under a sunny sky.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Highs peak in the upper 70s.

Thursday: A little cooler in the upper 60s. 30% chance of showers.
