Alabama vs. Kentucky score updated after review takes away first half basket

When it looked like Alabama took a 47-38 lead into halftime against Kentucky on Friday, the officials changed the score. They reviewed a goaltending call and found there was no violation, meaning the Crimson Tide had a 45-38 advantage after the first half.

The goaltending call was against Amari Williams and occurred between the 4:15 and 4:30 marks in the first half, according to the SEC Network broadcast. That would mean the call was on a dunk attempt he blocked with 4:13 to play before halftime.

Still, Alabama had a seven-point advantage heading into the locker room. The Crimson Tide shot 43.2% in the first half while Kentucky hit just 38.7% of its shots, including a 3-for-9 showing from three-point territory.

Labaron Philon took over for Alabama in the first half, dropping 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting while adding three assists to lead the Crimson Tide effort. On the Kentucky side, Williams led the way ins coring with 12 points while Travis Perry added 10 against Alabama.

UK was shorthanded for a few minutes, though. Otega Oweh took an elbow to the face, which left him bloodied on the court and sent him to the locker room with a mouth injury. However, after a few minutes getting treated in the locker room, he returned to the bench was able to return, although he only had two points and three rebounds at the break.

Oweh’s return was a welcome sight for Kentucky, which is also going without Lamont Butler for Friday’s game. He suffered a shoulder injury in a thrilling victory over Oklahoma Thursday night to send UK to the quarterfinals.

However, ESPN’s Molly McGrath reported good news after speaking with Mark Pope. The Wildcats are optimistic about Butler’s chances for a swift return and Pope said if Friday was a championship game, Butler would likely have been able to play.

“Kentucky guard Lamont Butler is out for this game with a left shoulder injury sustained in last night’s game, but head coach Mark Pope said imaging results came back this morning with very positive news,” McGrath said to open the SEC Network broadcast. “He said Butler suffered a different injury than the one he’s been nursing. They expect a quick turnaround for his recovery, saying if this was the championship game, he would be playing. And he wouldn’t rule Butler out if they advance this weekend. But they’re hopeful he can return, definitely, for the NCAA tournament.”
