SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines is pausing all flights headed to Hawaii amid a tsunami warning on Tuesday night. This pause includes flights for both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations,” the company said. “We are holding flight departures to the Islands on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines.”
Waves are expected to reach Hawaii by 10 p.m. PDT, though the severity has not yet been determined. People in Hawaii are urged to seek higher ground and stay away from beaches.
The National Weather Service says waves could cause damage along coastlines of all Hawaiian islands.
All departed flights heading to Hawaii are rerouting to the mainland, or diverting to other locations. The company said travelers could see operational impacts at airports.
On Tuesday, an 8.8 earthquake hit off of Russia, prompting tsunami warnings, watches and advisories for Japan, Hawaii, Alaska and the U.S. West Coast.
Western Washington’s coast remains under a tsunami advisory with some impacts expected to the outer coast.
Alaska Airlines is offering the option to change or cancel your flight under a flexible travel policy, if your travel plans included flights to Oahu, Kona, Kauai and Maui.
