‘American Idol’ judges confirm Top 14 contestants with tense on-air decision

“American Idol” fans may have cast millions of votes after Sunday’s episode, but it was judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan who selected which performers would go home Monday night.

Ultimately, Isaiah Misailegalu, Drew Ryn, Baylee Littrell, Zaylie Windsor, Olivier Bergeron, and Victor Solomon did not advance.

Following a three-hour Easter special that revealed the Top 20 contestants, Monday’s episode split the remaining “Idol” hopefuls into two groups. The 10 singers who received the most votes automatically secured their spot among the Top 14, while the bottom 10 contestants were in the “danger zone,” and had to “sing for survival” in front of the judging panel.

Contestants Kolbi Jordan, Thunderstorm Artis, Filo, John Foster, Mattie Pruitt, Canaan James Hill, Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, Slater Nalley, and Gabby Samone each earned their spot in the “victory zone.”

Isaiah Misailegalu, Drew Ryn, Josh King, Ché Chesterman, Baylee Littrell, Desmond Roberts, Zaylie Windsor, Olivier Bergeron, Victor Solomon, and Amanda Barise, however, landed in the bottom 10, and took turns performing in front of the judges to stay in the competition.

“The might be the toughest,” Bryan said before conferring with Underwood and Richie about which six contestants to cut.

“You guys rose to the challenge, week after week, challenge after challenge,” Underwood told the “danger zone” group. “You’ve done amazing. Take that with you and be proud of that, no matter what happens.”

Ultimately, the judging panel selected King, Chesterman, Barise, and Solomon to complete the Top 14 — a decision that sent home Misailegalu, Ryn, Littrell, Windsor, Bergeron, and Solomon. The judges made the quick and tense decision during a commercial break Monday evening.

The Top 14 contestants will compete again on Sunday during a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-themed episode, which feature Boston-born inductee James Taylor as a guest mentor.
