An ‘American Idol’ winner will return to mentor this season’s contestants

Carrie Underwood isn’t the only “American Idol” winner who will be involved in Season 23 of the show. During Monday’s episode, host Ryan Seacrest announced that Season 3 winner Fantasia will be a guest mentor and performer during the next round of the singing competition.

Fantasia will appear on next Monday’s episode of the show, which Seacrest described as celebrating “iconic ‘Idol’ moments.”

“On tap to mentor this historic show will be Fantasia,” Seacrest said, turning to see the stunned faces of this season’s remaining contestants.

“That’s the reaction we expected,” he added, before teasing an “epic, not-to-miss performance” from Fantasia as well.

Since her “Idol” win in 2004, the R&B singer has released seven albums, scored a No. 1 hit with “I Believe,” and earned a Grammy Award for her song “Bittersweet.” She’s also ventured into the acting world, most notably portraying the character Celie Johnson in “The Color Purple” on both Broadway and the 2023 film adaptation of the musical.

Other guest mentors who have appeared during Season 23 thus far include Ashanti and Josh Groban, who mentored the Top 24 “Idol” hopefuls. Boston-born singer James Taylor will also appear as a guest mentor on next Sunday’s episode of the competition for a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-themed night.
