Another former AEW wrestler is getting treated like a big star by WWE

SmackDown airs tonight (Apr. 4) with a live show emanating from the Allstate Arena near Chicago, Illinois. This is the fifth episode of SmackDown during the seven week build towards WrestleMania 41, which takes place on the weekend of April 19 and 20.

Tonight’s episode of SmackDown features the highly anticipated debut of Rey Fenix. The former AEW star has been linked to WWE in rumors and reports going back to last August, so this one has been a long time coming. Now that he’s finally free of his AEW contract, Fenix is set to perform for the first time since July, joining WWE’s blue brand with a couple of weeks to go until WrestleMania 41.

WWE has yet to name Rey’s opponent tonight, but it seems like a lock that it will be a showcase match to establish that Fenix is a really big deal, just like his lucha brother Penta is on Raw. WWE has a history of treating former AEW stars like a big deal once they arrive (see Cody Rhodes, Jade Cargill & Penta), and things should be no different tonight when Fenix steps into a WWE ring for the very first time.

There is a rumor that WWE has or had plans for a program between Fenix and Andrade, so perhaps we will find out if that’s true tonight. Andrade desperately needs something to do on SmackDown, even if it involves Latinos feuding with each other yet again.

Fenix is a special athlete who does breathtaking moves and flips in the ring that seem physically impossible at times, so prepare to be wowed tonight on SmackDown when he finally makes his WWE debut.

The rest of tonight’s card

Braun Strowman and Jacob Fatu look to settle their issues for good tonight in a Last Man Standing match. A monster like Braun typically fares well with this gimmick, but he’s clearly the underdog because there doesn’t seem to be any way to keep Jacob down for a 10 count. There’s also the fact that Braun won his previous matches against Fatu by disqualification, and that kind of finish is off the table here. If Solo Sikoa decides to interfere, there’s nothing Braun can do about it, except hope that United States Champion LA Knight has his back. But whose side is Solo really on?

Naomi vs. B-Fab is also booked on tonight’s show. This stems from Naomi’s pre-match ambush last week on Michin. B-Fab is looking for payback here, but I don’t like her chances unless Jade Cargill gets involved.

Other stuff to keep an eye on

WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton seems to think all the pressure is on Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 41, and that it’s not a big deal if she loses her title in the most important match of her career. Will Flair grab a mic and clue in Stratton about how she has everything to lose in just a couple of weeks?

– Drew McIntyre says he got real glass stuck in his eye last week in London, courtesy of Damian Priest. Is it time for some promos to make their match official at WrestleMania?

– CM Punk is a Raw guy, but you know he’ll make an appearance tonight on SmackDown considering the show is in Chicago. How will CM react to the news that he finally gets to close out WrestleMania this year in the main event? Will Punk continue to drive a wedge between Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman over this mysterious favor that the wiseman owes him?

– Kevin Owens cost Randy Orton a match against Drew McIntyre last week. Does that mean Randy now plans to punt KO’s head off his body multiple times at WrestleMania?

WWE Tag Team Champions Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins took care of Pretty Deadly last week. Will DIY or Motor City Machine Guns get the next title shot?

– Zelina Vega’s pursuit of Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green is a total fail so far. Will Zelina continue her title chase by losing against Alba Fyre next?

– It looks like Aleister Black might be returning to WWE on the April 25 episode of SmackDown. Will the latest smoky teaser video give new information that contradicts that conclusion?

– Does WWE Champion Cody Rhodes plan to show up on SmackDown and continue to trash John Cena for being a corporate sellout? Is any random heel in the back dumb enough to interrupt Cody while he’s in the middle of doing that?

– Where the f*** are Alexa Bliss and the Wyatt Sicks? Are they on ice until after WrestleMania 41?

What will you be looking for on SmackDown?
