The Monday after Easter tends to sneak up on people. You spend Easter Sunday feasting on a big brunch and recovering from an intense Easter egg hunt, then come Monday, it can be a shock when you have to get back to the real world. So, while you’re debating whether it’s socially acceptable to eat leftover carrot cake for breakfast (it absolutely is), you might also be wondering: Are banks open on Easter Monday?

It’s a fair question. Easter Monday is recognized as a public holiday in many countries, but in the United States, it doesn’t get the same level of attention as Good Friday or Easter Sunday. Depending on where you live, you might see businesses running as usual—or you might find yourself standing in front of locked doors, regretting not making that bank deposit earlier.

Whether you need to deposit a check, withdraw some cash, or speak with a teller, read on to avoid a potentially awkward trip to a locked bank door. Find out whether banks are open on Easter Monday and what you can do if you need to take care of banking while your branch is closed.

Are Banks Open on Easter Monday?

The first thing to know is that Easter Monday is not a federal holiday in the United States. This means that, officially, government offices, post offices, and banks aren’t required to close. Unlike Good Friday, which is a public holiday in some states, Easter Monday holds no such distinction.

That said, for most Americans, the day after Easter won’t interfere with banking needs as major banks will be open on Easter Monday and normal services will be available. Specifically, Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank remain open on Easter Monday. Since it’s not a federal holiday, regular banking hours apply.

However, if you bank with a smaller institution or have international banking needs, it’s always best to double-check before making a trip. Some financial institutions, especially those with international ties or branches in Canada and Europe (where Easter Monday is a public holiday), might choose to close or operate on reduced hours. Additionally, smaller credit unions and regional banks might choose to close or have limited hours.

Easter Monday Bank Hours

As Easter is a Sunday, banks are generally closed. Most major banks resume regular business hours on Easter Monday. However, it’s always wise to check with your local branch, as operating hours can differ. And since Easter Monday isn’t a federal holiday, you can also count on banks to have normal hours the next business day (Tuesday).

Alternative Banking Options

Of course, going to a bank isn’t the only way to handle your finances. Perhaps the easiest route is online banking. Most transactions can be handled digitally, whether it’s transferring funds, paying bills, or checking your balance after Easter shopping. You can also always visit an ATM. If you need to make balance inquiries, or withdraw and deposit cash, ATMs don’t take holidays (though they might charge you a fee to remind you of their unwavering service).

So, if you have checks to deposit, bills to pay, or an urgent need to speak with a teller about that suspicious chocolate bunny purchase on your debit card, you should be good to go. But hey, checking ahead never hurt anyone.
