Bears take MSU OL Luke Newman in sixth round of NFL Draft

Luke Newman is headed to the NFL.

In the sixth round of the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected Newman with the 195th overall pick Saturday afternoon.

A Brother Rice graduate from Bloomfield Hills, Newman began his college football career with four seasons at Holy Cross, where he was a two-time FCS All-American. He transferred to Michigan State last year, banking on a tougher Big Ten schedule and development to help him improve.

Playing at guard for a team-leading 739 snaps, Newman graded out a 71.9 according to PFF, which ranked him 71st at his position. At Michigan State’s pro day, Newman put together an impressive display, including a 35-inch vertical and 29 reps on bench press. He also earned an invite to the Detroit Lions’ pro day.

Newman addresses one of Chicago’s biggest needs: offensive line help. Last season, last year’s first overall pick Caleb Williams faced pressure from opposing pass rushers on a lot of his drop backs. In free agency, the Bears added center Drew Dalman and guards Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney to bring depth to the unit. Newman adds a young prospect to the mix.

With Newman’s selection, Michigan State has had a player selected in the NFL Draft the past four years since seeing no players selected in 2021. That year ended an 80-year streak of a player being selected from the Spartans.

Chicago’s draft class includes Michigan tight end Colston Loveland (10th overall), Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III (39th), Boston College offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo (56th), Texas A&M defensive tackle Shemar Turner (62nd), Maryland linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II (132nd) and UTSA cornerback Zah Frazier (148th)
