Players were just about ready to take the field at the MLB Speedway Classic on Saturday, Aug. 2, but then the rain came in.
The MLB Speedway Classic between the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves, set to be the most-attended MLB game ever, was delayed for over two hours due to rain near Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET.

More than 85,000 tickets were purchased for the much-anticipated game, which was originally slated to have Tennessee natives Chase Burns and Spencer Strider on the mound for the Reds and Braves, respectively.

Braves-Reds weather updates at MLB Speedway Classic
9:32 p.m. ET: The MLB Speedway Classic was set to start at 7:15 p.m. ET, but the tarp was unraveled at 7:19 p.m. and remained there until around 8:50 p.m.
First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET, over two hours after it was initially scheduled. Spencer Strider will no longer be the starter for the Braves, with Austin Cox now taking the ball first.
Rain is projected to remain in the area until around 9:58 p.m. ET, according to AccuWeather.
Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said on the Fox broadcast “it’s gonna be awhile it looks like” after meeting with MLB officials on the field during the rain delay.
The game will be played on Sunday, Aug. 3, if the game can’t be played on Aug. 2, according to Knoxville News. Both teams have built-in off days to allow for the potential weather contingency.
Rain has hit Bristol, Tennessee, on and off throughout the day, and fans are hoping for the rain to clear up so the Reds and Braves can play in the much-anticipated first-ever MLB game in Tennessee. It’s also a tough break for MLB, who clearly put lots of effort into the game.
