As the polls for the Canada elections 2025 closed, the National Democratic Party failed to secure even 12 seats, thus losing the party’s national status.

The NDP contested on 343 seats, but secured just eight, as the polls closed.

The party had secured 24 seats during the previous election.

The development is being seen as a blow to the supporters of Khalistan in Canada as Jagmeet Singh, a leader of the NDP, is recognised as a Khalistani sympathiser.

Various reports suggest Singh is part of the Sikh community, which, though just two per cent of Canada’s population, has a massive influence on Canadian politics.

Ahead of the 2025 elections, Singh reportedly backed former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his confrontation with India, but later withdrew support to disassociate his party from Trudeau’s Liberal Party.

It is also believed that Singh kept Trudeau’s minority Liberal government in power for more than two years in return for more social spending.

As the polls had opened in Canada, Carney’s Liberals were ahead of Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, while the New Democratic Party was in a distant third place. The separatist Bloc Quebecois, which only campaigned in the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, was in fourth.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals retained power in the country’s election on Monday, but CTV News predicted they would fall short of the majority government he had wanted to help him negotiate tariffs with US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.

The Liberals needed to win 172 of the House of Commons’ 343 electoral districts, known as seats, for a majority that would allow them to govern without support from a smaller party.

The Liberals were leading or elected in 156 districts, followed by the Conservatives with 145, according to CTV.

The westernmost province of British Columbia, where polls closed last, could decide whether Liberals fall short of a majority government.
