Michigan State football hasn’t had as many high draft picks in the last five years, but the school had a player selected for the fourth straight year in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Spartan standout interior offensive lineman Luke Newman heard his name called with the 195th overall pick. Newman will make the trek to Chicago as he becomes the newest member of the Bears.
Newman had an outstanding career at Holy Cross, where he started 37 games, before transferring to Michigan State last year. He started all 12 games for the Spartans at the left guard spot.

Newman’s selection continues to prove that, despite the struggles of Michigan State football over the last three seasons, the program can still develop some talent. Not to mention, Coach Jonathan Smith has had a great track record of producing NFL offensive linemen.
It also marks the third Spartan offensive lineman to be selected in the last four NFL Drafts. He joins AJ Arcuri, who was picked in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, and Nick Samac in the 2024 Draft, who was a seventh-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens.
Newman is going to have a good chance to go to the Bears and compete for a spot in the lineup. He joins a team on the rise. Not to mention the opportunity to block for Caleb Williams has to feel good.
Newman’s hard work at his pro day certainly paid off. He gets to join a rebuilt offensive line for what looks to be one of the more exciting offenses in the NFL with Ben Johnson at the helm for his first season.
