Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s race winner, speaking to Sky Sports:
I hope so. It’s been an incredible weekend from start to finish. The car’s been pretty mega. Just proud of the whole weekend. What I feel like I deserve from last week. The team did a great job.
The crowd’s been excellent this week. There are a few too many Lewis Hamilton fans. We’ll convert some of you next year.
Sam Bird, Formula E driver, on BBC Radio 5 Live:
That was a great job by McLaren, that was more nerve-wracking than everybody on that pit wall would have wanted but they got the job done
McLaren are having such a good start to the season.
That’s now two wins from two and this time they even managed a cheeky one-two.
Their car just looks completely dominant, they will be winning a lot of races this season.
Zak Brown has just grabbed his two drivers for a photo and is beaming like a Cheshire cat.
Oscar Piastri is such a chill guy, isn’t he?
there are no crazy celebrations from the Australian, he barely even seems excited about the fact he has just won.
As he jumps out of his car, he just raises his fist and points to the fans, and that’s it.
He does have a little smile now as he is hugged by Zak Brown, but it’s the kind of smile I would have when I see there are still some snacks in my cupboard.
I am pretty happy when that happens, in fairness.
Now that is what you call a good day at the office.
Honestly, it wasn’t the best of races but Piastri will not give two hoots about that.
After what happened to him in Australia, he was desperate to put things right in China.
And well, that’s what he has just done!
Oscar Piastri gets his first win of the 2025 season!
What a drive form the Australian, he barely even broke a sweat as he bounces back from his home race disappointment.
Lando Norris holds off George Russell to make it a one-two for McLaren in China.
The perfect day for the papaya pair.
Jeez, what has happened to Charles Leclerc?
His pace has fallen off of a cliff and now Lewis Hamilton is just four seconds behind him.
There is only one lap to go, though, so I doubt Ferrari will make them swap.
Max Verstappen bides his time before going down the inside of Charles Leclerc at the hairpin.
That is the champion at his very best, and now he has his sights on George Russell.
The gap is six seconds, but he only has three laps to bridge it.
Here comes Max Verstappen!
The Dutchman has really crept up on Charles Leclerc and now he is all over the back of him.
The gap is under half a second and has DRS – this move may not take long to complete.
We have a battle at last, hooray!
Ohhh, Jack Doohan is in trouble.
The Alpine rookie has picked up a 10-second time penalty for forcing Isack Hadjar off of the track.
It didn’t look a great move, and it wasn’t.
The two-stop strategy really isn’t working.
Lewis Hamilton has closed the gap to 12 seconds to Max Verstappen, but it’s just not enough.
He is going to roll over that line in sixth unless something crazy happens.
His only hope is that some backmarkers hold the Dutchman up.
The Racing Bulls are not having the best of times out there.
They have both gone for the two-stop while everyone around them is just doing the one.
And now Yuki Tsunoda needs a new front wing, so that’s a third stop fo the race.
That top 10 feels like a long way away.
Is Max Verstappen starting to catch Charles Leclerc?
The Ferrari driver seems to be slowing up while the Dutchman is going at a decent pace here.
The gap is still three seconds, but it is getting smaller, and smaller, by the lap.
Lewis Hamilton’s decision to pit is working wonders.
He has only lost one place and is down in sixth, and is now flying as he catches Max Verstappen.
The Brit puts in the fastest lap of the race, but he is still 16 seconds behind the Dutchman.
He has to hope their tyres fall off a click, or they pit soon. Or both.
Oliver Beasrman is at it again, this is incredible.
The Briton started this grand prix down in 17th but he overtakes Pierre Gasly and moves up into the top 10.
What a difference a week makes, eh?
Yes, Max Verstappen is in this race.
I have barely spoken about him today, but he is now doing something noteworthy so I can.
The Dutchman seems to be moving at some pace now and he is catching Lewis Hamilton.
Oh, just as I say that, Hamilton pits…
Oliver Bearman is on one.
The Haas driver just keeps on getting in the overtakes and now he gets past Carlos Sainz.
The rookie is absolutely flying, jeez.
Ohhh, maybe we will have drama.
Rain is reportedly meant to come just before the end of the race, which could cause carnage.
It’s not here yet, but man it’s looking cloudy.
These McLarens are just top-class, they really are.
The one-two seems to be all but confirmed as Lando Norris is now nearly five seconds ahead of third-placed George Russell.
The car just seems miles better than anyone else’s on track, they have incredible pace.
My word, Liam Lawson really is struggling.
Oliver Bearman dances past him with ease and the New Zealander drops to 17th.
Lawson then pits straight away and concedes another position – it’s not going his way again.
Gabriel Bortoleto, I didn’t know you had that in you.
The rookie has just clocked the fastest lap of the race and he is in dead last. Not bad, eh?
I mean, he had just pitted so it does make sense… sort of.
I can’t keep talking about Charles Leclerc, can I?
I mean, there is literally nothing else interesting happening in this race other than his battle with George Russell.
Everybody just seems settled where they are…
Here comes Charles Leclerc.
The Frenchman is now all over George Russell, the gap is now less than a second.
If he can get past the Mercedes soon, he will have Lando Norris in his sights.
Would getting past the McLaren be out of the question?
The Chinese Grand Prix top five after 25 laps:
1. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
2. Lando Norris (McLaren)
3. George Russell (Mercedes)
4. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
5. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
My word, Charles Leclerc really is moving at some lick.
He is going to be on the back of George Russell before we know it, the gap is barely over a second now.
It’s pretty crazy how he is doing this with a dodgy front wing, I don’t quite know how.
Ferrari tell Lewis Hamilton to let his team-mate past, and after a couple of answerbacks, he does.
Leclerc is absolutely flying and has George Russell in his sights now – all this with a broken front wing.
His pace is electric, it’s crazy.
Oscar Piastri is having the time of his life.
The Australian is cruising out in front with not a care in the world, and the gap to Lando Norris is just getting bigger.
He is now over four-and-a-half seconds in front of his teammate and he is just pulling away.
I sense a third career win on the way for Piastri.
Lance Stroll just can’t stop getting involved…
I was just about to say how Charles Leclerc is all over the back of Lewis Hamilton, but suddenly Stroll gets in between them.
Leclerc then has to battle the Aston Martin before eventually getting past him and onto the back of Hamilton.
I have a feeling the Ferraris will do the old switcharoo soon.
Well, that didn’t take long!
Lando Norris is back in front as he goes down the inside of George Russell, a nd the Mercedes is forced to yield.
Lance Stroll is off the hook…
This undercut is just so overpowered, wow.
The decision to pit George Russell has paid off as he manages to squeak past Lando Norris after the latter comes out of the pits.
Lance Stroll causes a bit of chaos as he gets stuck in the middle of the battle, and it really doesn’t help Norris.
I look forward to hearing the radio from that…
George Russell tells the Mercedes pit wall that he thinks this race is a one-stop.
Well, just moments later the camera cuts to him going into the pits, so his engineers don’t exactly agree.
Showing the Brit who is boss.
The undercut works for Yuki Tsunoda.
Kimi Antonelli comes out from his pit and the Racing Bull flies past him in a flash.
That is a great strategy from the Racing Bulls and Tsunoda is reeping the rewards of it.
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is pitting.
The Chinese Grand Prix top 10 after 12 laps:
1. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
2. Lando Norris (McLaren)
3. George Russell (Mercedes)
4. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
6. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
7. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
8. Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls)
10. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
This Red Bull really isn’t great, jeez.
Max Verstappen is falling back at quite a lick, he is now nearly five seconds behind Charles Leclerc, who is in fifth.
His podium hopes can be kissed goodbye, I think.
The Ferraris are having a cheeky little battle, which is what we want to see.
Charleaz Leclerc is hunting down Lewis Hamilton and is now less than a second behind his team-mate.
Could we see a line soon?
So far, so good for Oscar Piastri.
The Australian is managing to stay over a second in front of team-mate Lando Norris, and he looks fairly comfortable.
I have a feeling that this race could be one of those that lacks drama, going off the early moments here.
Let’s hope I am wrong, eh?
Fernando Alonso is already back in the garage after reporting a problem with his brakes.
there is no fixing that and he is forced to retire already – now that is unlucky.
Right, it all seems to be settling down.
Liam Lawson has had a decent start and is now up in 18th. I mean, he has a lot of work to do, but that’s how he would have wanted to get things going.
Isack Hadjar hasn’t had the best of starts mind and he is down in ninth place. two down from where he started.
Charles Leclerc, Ferrari driver, on team radio:
Charles Leclerc has some damage to his front wing after overtaking Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton comes across his team-mate and he clips a little bit off of Leclerc’s front wing on the left-hand side.
What a move that is, Lando Norris goes around the outside of George Russell and he flies into second place.
Lewis Hamilton also gets a good start and races past Max Verstappen, who has had a shocker.
It’s lights out and away we go, can Oscar Piastri hold off George Russell into the first corner?
It’s going to be a cracker, whatever happens.
Right then, the drivers are off.
The clock had struck 7am here and Oscar Piastri starts to lead the drivers off on their formation lap.
It’s time to get those tyres warm!
Oh yeah, it’s time to get excited.
Sky Sports are just going through the grid and it has got me pumped up.
I’m not sure what it is about the F1 music, but it just gets me so excited when it plays before a race.
We are closing in on the start of this race.
The fans are ready, I am ready, but are you ready?
The supporters in Shanghai are making a right old racket, and you love to see it.
They are some of the most passionate racing fans I have seen in recent times, they are loving life.
We love a bit of atmosphere at these races, don’t we?
Charles Leclerc Ferrari driver, speaking to Sky Sports:
I’m feeling good, the target is to try and recover in what was a difficult weekend for me. [I want] a good start and then hopefully the pace will be there to come back in front.
There are less than 15 minutes until the drivers get those wheels turning, and I, for one, am buzzing.
Max Verstappen looks in the zone and he has a lot of work to do if he wants to get on that podium.
Knowing him, he will find a way, won’t he?
Well, I say that but he has been moaning about his car at every chance he gets, so maybe not.
It’s already been an emotional day in Shanghai.
Drivers and other team staff gathered this morning to pay their respects to Eddie Jordan, who passed away aged 76 on Thursday.
Jordan was one of the biggest and best personalities in the sport, and the grid is in mourning.
I hate to join the pile-on, but my word Liam Lawson is having a stinking start to life at Red Bull.
After finishing 14th in the sprint race, the New Zealander finished dead last in qualifying.
That second Red Bull seat may not be easy, but you can’t be finishing last in the grid… it’s just not good enough.
And now news has come through that he will start the Grand Prix from the pit lane.
He is going to have to play a blinder if he wants any points…
The Chinese Grand Prix is one of the most exciting races to watch on the calendar, it really is.
There is a reason Lewis Hamilton loves the track in Shanghai so much, it’s because of how fast it is.
Expect to see some crazy racing when it all kicks off at 7am, China always brings the heat.
With that being said, here are some facts about Shanghai you may want to know:
- Track Length – 5.451km
- Most wins – Lewis Hamilton (6)
- Safety Car probability – 75%
- Virtual Safety Car probability – 75%
- Pit stop time loss – 23.9 seconds (including 2.5s stationary)
Yesterday was busy, busy, busy.
Oscar Piastri may have taken pole but before that, we got to watch the sprint race, which is always great fun.
And well, it was certainly great fun for Lewis Hamilton.
The Briton held off Piastri and Max Verstappen to win for the first time in Red after a superb drive.
After how he performed in Australia, it was a much-needed victory to boost the hopes of Ferrari.
Qualifying did not quite go as well for Hamilton after, but the eight points are good enough for the Scuderia.
If he can drive like he did in the sprint race, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hamilton rise u the leaderboard.
But can he challenge for a podium?
Oscar Piastri, McLaren driver, speaking after qualifying:
I’m glad it looked like that [being hooked up] because it didn’t feel like that. In Q3 I just found a lot of pace, in Q1 and Q2 I was genuinely struggling but the car just came alive in Q3 and I came alive.
I’m happy with what I did in the end, the laps were still a bit scruffy but I’m just pumped to be on pole. It’s a lot of fun, with the new surface it’s extremely grippy which for us is the best feeling in the world.
The only thing that comes with that is if you lose grip it bites and you’ve probably seen a lot of snaps and a lot of moments this weekend; with the surface we’ve got it’s pretty tricky. When you hook it up, it feels pretty mega, so I will take the fastest lap of Shanghai.
Oscar Piastri may be in pole position, but that doesn’t mean this race is wrapped up already.
I’m pretty sure George Russell will have something to say about that.
Look, we all know that McLaren have the best car in the early stage of this season, so Piastri certainly has an advantage.
The Australian must be confident too as it was his first-ever polse in Formula One.
But Russell did look very good in qualifying after the sprint race, I have to say, and he will be hunting Piastri down from the start.
Lando Norris, who won last week in Australia, will also be having a pop too, I’m sure of it.
It could be a chaotic first corner, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
The Chinese Grand Prix starting grid:
1. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
2. George Russell (Mercedes)
3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
5. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
6. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
7. Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls)
8. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
9. Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls)
10. Alex Albon (Williams)
12. Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber)
13. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
14. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
15. Carlos Sainz (Williams)
16. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
17. Oliver Bearman (Haas)
19. Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber)
20. Liam Lawson (Red Bull)
If you are up this early then you must be a huge F1 fan, it’s the only explanation for being up at 6am on a Sunday.
We are in for a cracker of a morning as the drivers take to the track in Hanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri is the man to beat after putting in a record-breaking lap to take pole ahead of George Russell.
It’s going to be a very entertaining 56 laps as the drivers attack the Australian from the get-go.
It’s the perfect day for it too, the sunshine is beaming down on the track in Shanghai – it’s beautiful.
Let’s get this show on the road.
