Former Xavier men’s basketball coach Chris Mack said he will be staying with the College of Charleston for a second season.The 55-year-old Cincinnati native released a statement Tuesday night amid rumors that Xavier was targeting him to become their next head coach.Sean Miller left Xavier to take the head coaching position at Texas this week, leaving the Musketeers with an opening to fill.Late Tuesday night, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that Xavier is hiring New Mexico head coach Richard Pitino.“Just about a year ago my family joined me at Cistern Yard to celebrate the start of something special here in Charleston. You have been incredibly supportive from day one. The Macks can’t wait to run it back in year two. Better than ever,” Mack said in a statement to social media, seemingly removing himself from consideration for the Xavier job.Mack previously served as head coach of Xavier for nine seasons from 2009-18, reaching the NCAA Tournament eight times.Mack just completed his first season with College of Charleston, leading the Cougars to a 24-9 record. He also coached at Louisville for four seasons after leaving the Musketeers in 2018.
