Columbus gets an ‘F’ for air quality in American Lung Association report

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A new report released Wednesday by the American Lung Association shows air quality in Columbus is worsening, particularly when it comes to particle pollution.

The 2025 “State of the Air” report ranks Columbus 54th worst in the nation for year-round particle pollution, down from 78th last year. The city also received an “F” grade for short-term particle pollution, with an average of 4.2 unhealthy air days per year, up significantly from 0.3 days in the previous report.

Ground-level ozone pollution in the Columbus metro area remained unchanged, with one unhealthy day reported and a “C” grade. However, the city’s national ozone ranking improved from 79th worst to 139th worst.

“These pollutants are causing serious health impacts,” said Kezia Ofosu Atta, advocacy director for the Lung Association in Ohio. “Children are suffering asthma attacks, outdoor workers are falling ill, and air pollution is linked to low birth weights and even premature deaths.”

The Lung Association is calling on Ohio policymakers to take urgent action. Nationally, the report found that 156 million Americans live in areas with at least one failing pollution grade.
