The progressive, Argentinian-born pontiff had recently spent 38 days in hospital where he’d undergone treatment for double pneumonia but died of a stroke, which caused a coma and “irreversible” heart failure, according to his death certificate released by the Vatican.

Pope Francis’ last wishes were revealed when his will published on Monday, local time, which true to his character outlined his desire for a simple burial.

In a statement announcing his passing, the Vatican’s Cardinal Kevin Farrell described Francis as someone who dedicated his entire life to the church.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” he said.

“At 7.35 this morning (Monday morning local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

The pontiff had been at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after suffering bronchitis. His death has sent shockwaves around the world and triggered nine days of mourning in Italy.
