“Gotta keep it together here, folks,” said Singh, as his voice broke slightly, as he took to the stage at the Metrotown Hilton. “The love is amazing, I appreciate y’all.”

Singh went on to congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney and reiterated the need to continue fighting for Canada.

“I want to take a moment to congratulate Prime Minister Carney on his victory. He has an important job to do, to represent all Canadians and to protect our country and its sovereignty from the threats of Donald Trump tonight and every night, all of us here, we’re on Team Canada.”

9:10 p.m.: Early results in New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville have shifted twice with first the NDP then the Liberals taking the lead, but with 70 of 193 polls reporting it is Conservative Indy Panchi who leads with 3,499 votes and Liberal Jake Sawatzky in second with 3,374 votes. The NDP’s Peter Julian is now third at 2,854.

8:50 p.m.: It’s still early, with only 30 of 200 polls reporting in Burnaby Central, but NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is in third place and at risk of losing his seat, trailing both the Liberal and Conservative candidates.

Wade Chang of the Liberals leads with 3,261 votes to 1,604 for Singh. The Conservative’s James Yan has 2,743 votes.

5:30 p.m.: The existential questions around Canada’s relationship with the United States definitely weighed on voters departing the polling station at the City of Burnaby’s Metrotown banquet hall with less than two hours to polls closing.

“Substantially important,” is how Metrotown resident Michael, who declined to give his last name, characterized this election, speaking to a reporter under grey, drizzly skies after departing the hall.
