Haim Gets Tangled Up in Self-Sabotage (and Drew Starkey’s Arms) in ‘Relationships’ Video

Haim knows all about falling in love and blowing it up on their new single, “Relationships,” the first lead release from the trio in three years. But all that knowledge doesn’t make it any easier to navigate. In fact, it only makes the push and pull even more intense.

Haim puts this cycle of self-sabotage on display in the “Relationships” video, which follows Danielle Haim as she falls in and out of — and back in and back out of — love with actor Drew Starkey over the course of three and a half minutes.

The Camille Summers-Valli-directed visual toys with time and sequencing set to the pacing of the record as she sings: “Baby, how can I explain when an innocent mistake/Turns into seventeen days? Fuckin’ relationships/Don’t they end up all the same when there’s no one left to blame?/I think I’m in love, but I can’t stand fuckin’ relationships.”

The trio teased the record in the weeks leading up to its release with individual Instagram posts declaring their own relationship statuses. Danielle posed in an “I’m Single” shirt, and Este flashed a massive diamond ring while sporting a top that read “I’m Taken.” Alana, on the other hand, declared her status with a shirt that said: “I’m ???”

“This one took us 7 damn years to crack but we’re so stoked it’s finally here!! Relationships is out now. Single girl summer let’s fucking go,” Haim shared on Instagram. In an Instagram Story post ahead of its release, they instructed: “You have 20 minutes to breakup with whoever you are with.”

Danielle produced “Relationships” with Rostam Batmanglij for the group’s upcoming fourth studio album. It also sees the return of familiar collaborators Ariel Rechtshaid, Buddy Ross, and Tobias Jesso Jr. Haim’s most recent album, Women in Music Pt. III, arrived nearly five years ago.
