Rain is expected from midweek next week in the city
Usually rain is a bit of a downer but after persistent dry weather it’s probably something to be celebrated.
Rain is set to swamp New York later this weekend and into next week, which comes after skies were darkened with smoke from nearby wildfires.
The dry spring has led to an increased risk of fires breaking out, a problem being battled across the US.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for a number of parts of New York State, including the Big Apple itself. They warn that there is an “elevated risk for fire spread,” as dry conditions combine with gusty winds.
Hudson Valley and Long Island are most at risk of fires, with their FDRA rating seen as “high”, while the majority of the state should be safe.
With the fire threats, New Yorkers could probably do with a bit of rain.

New York is wetter on average that the UK capital of London
Sun will continue across the city on Wednesday and Thursday even if the temperature will take a dip, the BBC reports.
But it won’t last long.
Friday will see temperatures in the mid 80s but with some cloud cover – an indicator of what’s to come after.
New Yorkers should make sure they don’t put their waterproofs away quite yet as almost a week of rain is set to hit the city.
The rain will begin in earnest on Saturday May 3.
The BBC are predicting the chance of light rain getting worse around lunchtime. At least spots of sunshine will offer a bit of respite but only a little.
Sunday daytime will be dryer with a much lower chance of rain (14%) but as night falls the rains will start.
While May could be wetter than average, temperatures look likely to remain normal
The deluge will continue into Monday next week before lightening up in the late afternoon.
Tuesday again will be a little dryer but Wednesday will bring four days of near non-stop rain. Forecasters predict “Light rain and a gentle breeze” every day until Saturday.
Although forecasters at this stage are suggesting a lot of rain, the poor weather is set to lift as we get into the following week (May 12 onwards).
Also with the worst of the rain starting Wednesday next week, there’s still chance of the forecast changing in the meantime.
But if the predictions stand true, warmer and drier weather will likely arrive May 12.
According to New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation, climate change is heralding change for the Big Apple. Across the northeastern U.S., winters are warming faster than any other season.

Over the last century, average winter temperatures have increased by approximately 3°F, spring temperatures by 2°F, and summer and fall temperatures by 1.4°F. And although warmer temperatures seem appealing, it can have ruinous affects on the flora and fauna.
The DEC reports: “Warmer winters in New York are also affecting the winter-spring season transition, impacting the timing of blooming for trees and flowers which migrating and hibernating wildlife depend on for food.
“Changes to the timing of the winter-spring transition can also impact agriculture by extending the length of the growing season, with the last frost of winter occurring earlier in the year. Although increasing the length of the growing season can have advantages, it can also impact the types of crops that can be grown, encourage invasive species, weed growth, and crop diseases, and increase demand for irrigation.”
