Vipraj Nigam was revealed to be making his debut in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Capitals against Lucknow Super Giants in Match 4 of the ongoing IPL 2025 on Monday, March 24. The 20-year-old was secured for INR 50 lakh during the mega auction in Jeddah in November 2024.
The leg-spinning all-rounder represents Uttar Pradesh and featured for the domestic side in the 2024 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the seven matches he played that season, the budding talent picked up eight wickets at a decently miserly economy of 7.12. His eight-ball 27-run blitz against Andhra took his side to victory in the preliminary quarter-finals.
Playing for Lucknow Falcons in the UPT20 League last year, he grabbed headlines after picking up 20 wickets in 11 innings, while maintaining an economy of only 7.45. His prowess of bowling with a brisk pace and extract turn on significantly batting-friendly decks makes him quite a potent alternative during the middle phase of the innings.

Although Nigam does not have a lot of domestic outings behind him, he has shown immense potential as one of the next big things for Uttar Pradesh as well as Indian cricket in general.
Nigam scalps Markram in debut IPL over
Speaking to the ongoing game, Nigam was brought on to bowl in the fifth over of the game. A tossed-up delivery outside off-stump was miscued by Aiden Markram. The South African top-order batter ended up picking out Mitchell Starc at the long-off fence.
Interestingly, Nigam became the second bowler in IPL 2025 to register his maiden IPL wicket in the first over in the ongoing season. On Sunday, Vignesh Puthur scalped Ruturaj Gaikwad on the fifth delivery of his first over. The left-arm wrist-spinner ended up with a three-wicket haul in a losing cause, but won hearts with his exceptional spell with the ball against Chennai Super Kings.
