Lucy Dacus has confirmed that she and her Boygenius bandmate, Julien Baker, are a couple.

The New Yorker published a wide-ranging profile of the musician on Monday morning, which called her forthcoming album, Forever is a Feeling, “a gorgeous and tender album about falling in love.” Specifically, it’s about Dacus falling in love with Baker, and the magazine confirmed that the two are “now in a committed relationship.” While the two musicians have not exactly withheld affection from each other in public, neither of them have publicly spoken about the relationship until now, leaving fans to speculate.

But as the New Yorker wrote, it would be difficult to listen to Forever is a Feeling as someone with even the slightest familiarity with Boygenius lore without figuring out that it is blatantly about Baker. (One of the songs is titled “Most Wanted Man,” and contains the lyric “most wanted man in West Tennessee.” As the magazine pointed out, Baker is famously from outside of Memphis, which is in — you guessed it — west Tennessee.) Dacus told the magazine that making such a candid album has “been interesting, because I want to protect what is precious in my life, but also to be honest, and make art that’s true.”

“I think maybe a part of it is just trusting that it’s not at risk,” she told the New Yorker. “Maybe a healthier way to think about it is that it’s not actually fragile. These songs are about different people. But, you know, ‘Most Wanted Man in West Tennessee’—what are you gonna do?”

Dacus also shared some adorable tidbits about not just her romantic relationship, but her relationship with her other Boygenius bandmate, Phoebe Bridgers. While she and writer Amanda Petrusich were walking around the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, the musician said that she and Baker are members, and that “we have memberships because Phoebe gave them to us for my birthday.” “Last time, we brought a blanket and snacks and our books, and lay in the garden for, like, two hours, just napping and reading,” she shared.

It’s heartening to know that although Boygenius may have gone on indefinite hiatus in February 2024, the boys themselves still seem thick as thieves — and that Dacus and Baker are now comfortable enough to discuss their relationship in the press.
