Jerry Jones noted the Cowboys tried trading up for Jaydon Blue

The Dallas Cowboys started their third day of the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting Jaydon Blue out of the University of Texas. He marks the first running back that the team has drafted since Deuce Vaughn two years ago.

Blue has electric speed and is going to be a ton of fun to watch. Opinions from analysts are a bit all over the place on him though, so it is certainly a situation that will prove one side right over the course of time.

Obviously the Cowboys feel passionately about Blue though because they drafted him. What’s more is that they almost jumped up to do so.

Jerry Jones’ phone call to Blue was heard during Saturday’s edition of The Draft Show on the mothership and at the beginning of the conversation Jones said that the Cowboys were trying to trade up for about 6-7 picks before Blue ultimately fell to them at 149 overall.

One other running back did go in the 6-7 picks in front of Dallas as the San Francisco 49ers selected Jordan James out of Oregon, just for context and clarity.

Thankfully it seems that things worked out for the Cowboys. And perhaps not having to trade for Blue was the best possible outcome as the Cowboys did wind up executing a trade shortly after they took Blue. Dallas sent picks 174 and 211 to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for 152 and selected Florida linebacker Shemar James.

That is a solid day’s work.
