PHOENIX – The Milwaukee Brewers were on the verge of two of the best-pitched games in recent memory.
Instead, all they walked away with was walk-off frustration.
Staked to a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the ninth Saturday night at Chase Field, Joel Payamps and Trevor Megill imploded out of the Brewers’ bullpen, a cacophony of wildness and hard contact that culminated in a walk-off sacrifice fly from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. after six straight players reached base to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 win.

The Brewers were two outs shy of consecutive shutout victories when the struggling Payamps walked catcher Gabriel Moreno to set off a series of calamities. Alek Thomas followed with a 419-foot triple to center field to drive in the first run allowed by the Brewers since Payamps himself allowed five in the eighth inning while picking up the loss Thursday.
BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 5, Brewers 4
That brought the closer Megill into the game. He immediately sprayed four fastballs not even close to the strike zone to walk Garrett Hampson before Corbin Carroll just missed a game-tying homer to center and settled for a two-run double.
Megill, still yet to record an out, put the winning run on base with a walk of Geraldo Perdomo and Jake McCarthy lofted a game-tying single to center on the first pitch he saw.

Lourdes Gurriel, also first-pitch swinging following an intentional walk to load the bases, sailed a fly ball to medium-depth right field that brought a jaunting, jubilant Perdomo home to turn a disaster into a nightmare.
Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio tosses his bat aside after blasting a solo home run against the Diamondbacks during the sixth inning Saturday night at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Jackson Chourio loudly announced his hitting streak wasn’t going anywhere just yet.
After scalding a liner that fell into a glove at the warning track against Burnes in his previous at-bat, Chourio didn’t miss a first-pitch hanging slider in the sixth. The 21-year-old sent the mistake 448 feet to left for his fifth home run of the season.
Chourio’s National League-best hitting streak moved to 14 games in the process.
The Brewers made a fully-defensible decision to pull Chad Patrick one out into the fifth inning despite having not given up a run, but the move still nearly backfired.

With the top of the Diamondbacks order due, including lefties Corbin Carroll, Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor, Pat Murphy handed the ball to left-hander Bryan Hudson after Patrick won a 10-pitch battle against Garrett Hampson with a cutter for a called strike three.
Hudson retired Carroll with a pop up but walked Geraldo Perdomo, who reached for the third time in the game, and surrendered a double to Randal Grichuk, who was pinch-hitting for Smith. Naylor then put together a seven-pitch at-bat despite falling behind two strikes to nothing but eventually succumbed with a flyout to center.

With 4 ⅓ scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks, Patrick now owns a 0.63 ERA as a starting pitcher through three outings in the majors.
Who had that on their radar to begin the season?
Saturday, Patrick worked around traffic in each inning, navigating some hard contact to toss his second scoreless start out of the three he’s made. Arizona tallied five hits against the right-hander and drew a pair of walks but each time Patrick made the requisite pitches to escape unscathed.
In the first, that came via a Smith 4-6-3 double play and Naylor fly out after the first two batters reached base. Patrick’s next-most dicey frame was the fourth, in which Naylor led off with a double and Eugenio Suarez drew a one-out walk. But a Gabriel Moreno pop out and Alek Thomas grounder allowed him to get through once again without a run scoring.
Milwaukee jumped out in front, 2-0, with a second-inning rally but left more on their plate.

A Rhys Hoskins RBI single opened the scoring, bringing home William Contreras from second, and an ensuing Garrett Mitchell walk loaded the bases with nobody out.
Milwaukee scratched just one more run across as the rally dissipated quickly with a Joey Ortiz double play grounder and Oliver Dunn bouncer to first.
