The Detroit Lions have finally drafted an edge defender!
With the 196th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Lions have selected Ahmed Hassanein, edge defender out of Boise State.
At 6-foot-2, 267 pounds, Hassanein is short but strong. He’s a high-character player—ranking in the second tier of our Grit Index—and a team captain at Boise State.
He was also very productive in his two seasons as a full-time starter. In 28 games started between 2023 and 2024, Hassanein produced 32.0 tackles for loss and 22.0 sacks.
That said, his game will require a lot of development. After growing up in Egypt, he only became familiar with the game of football in high school. Hopefully because he has a strong football character, the Lions can get the most out of him.
In Detroit, he’ll compete for a spot of the 53-man roster and could even have a rotational role early if he balls out in training camp. However, like everyone else on the roster, he’ll have to earn it.
