Mavs end season with 120-106 loss to Grizzlies

MEMPHIS – Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane and Ja Morant combined for 68 points in leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a 120-106 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night at FedEx Forum in a Western Conference play-in tournament game.

The loss ended the season for the Mavs, who were trying to become the NBA’s first No. 10 seed to advance to the playoffs since the play-in tournament was implemented in 2021.

Jackson finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, Bane collected 22 points, five rebounds and nine assists, and Morant added 22 points, nine assists and three steals.

The Mavs were led by Anthony Davis, who battled through a calf injury to pour in a game-high 40 points and grab nine rebounds. In addition, the Mavs got 18 points from Klay Thompson, 16 points and seven assists from Brandon Williams, and 13 points and five assists from Naji Marshall.

The Mavs started poorly, falling behind 7-0, and later on, 34-14, with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. A slew of turnovers and some dead-eye shooting by the Grizzlies didn’t help the Mavs’ cause.

Overall, the Mavs committed 16 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Memphis. The Grizzlies also enjoyed a 16-7 advantage on the offensive boards.

In the first quarter, the Mavs turned the ball over seven times, leading to 11 points for Memphis. The Mavs shot just 9-of-20 from the field in the opening quarter, while the Grizzlies were 14-of-25 from the field and toted a 39-24 lead into the second quarter.

It was an uphill battle for the Mavs for the rest of the game as they didn’t stitch together enough sustained rallies or make enough stops on defense to turn this game around.

“We got turnovers and they shot the ball extremely well in that first half,” coach Jason Kidd said. “But I thought the response after that when we cut it to seven (was good), and we just never could get over the hump after that.

“We fought, but live-ball turnovers against this team puts you in a bad situation, and that’s what happened. Early, when we had live-ball turnovers, they capitalized and they made every shot there in that first half, so give them credit.”

While attacking the basket and draining three-pointers, Memphis was able to mount a 25-point lead before the Mavs came charging back on the strength of Davis and Thompson. Dallas got within seven points of Memphis (75-68) midway through the third quarter and would have made it a four-point deficit, but a three-pointer by Davis went halfway down and rimmed out.

After that, the Grizzlies, who led, 66-49 at the half, went on another run and eventually built their lead to 108-88 midway through the fourth quarter following a basket by Bane.

“They just sped us up and turned us over,” Thompson said. “We dug ourselves too big of a hole, but I think we responded well to start the second.

“It sucks. It’s a one-game elimination, there’s no adjustments you can make, there’s no game to look forward to again. It just stinks.”

The Grizzlies, who led wire-to-wire, out-rebounded the Mavs (50-36) and out-scored them in the paint (60-44). It was just a rough night all the way around for the Mavs.

Davis, meanwhile, said he got kneed in the calf by Zach Edey in the fourth quarter and that led to some discomfort. Davis left the game for a few minutes, then returned, but it was obvious he was not at full strength.

“We just wanted to leave it all on the floor, obviously given the situation,” Davis said. “I tried to do everything to try to just will the team to win.

“You lose you go home. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. So, I just wanted to leave everything out on the floor no matter what.”
