Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight rivals Bryce Mitchell vs. Jean Silva will go to war this weekend (Sat., April 12, 2025) inside Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida at UFC 314.
Bad blood or holy war? I can’t remember a UFC bout with a more spiritual lead up since Jiri Prochazka accused Alex Pereira of black magic (details here). What’s fun here is that Mitchell is fully committed to the bit — Featherweight’s favorite Flat Earther 100 percent believes that Silva is an agent of evil sending him naughty dreams at night.
As for the actual action in the cage, this bout is great fun on that end as well. “Thug Nasty” is genuinely a top-tier wrestler/grappler, whereas Silva is a ferocious knockout artist riding a huge Fighting Nerds wave of momentum. The winner leaves the cage as a Top 10-ranked fighter … and with their immortal soul fully intact!
Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:

‘Lord’ Opens As Big Betting Favorite Over ‘Thug Nasty’
How Mitchell Wins
Mitchell started his UFC career as a really excellent grappler with pretty decent wrestling and mediocre kickboxing. The latter two aspects of his game have come a really long way. He’s now a really quality wrestler in the open and along the fence, and Mitchell’s kickboxing is surprisingly effective as well. Sure, he couldn’t trade punches with Ilia Topuria or Josh Emmett (scary stuff), but that’s generally true for most 145-pounders.
Obviously, kickboxing with Silva isn’t the recommended path. Mitchell is good enough to exchange briefly, but every trade is dangerous. The fortunate part is that Silva commits heavily to his punches. That’s why he’s so powerful, but it’s also why Charles Jourdain was able to time and land reactive takedowns.
Mitchell is quite good at slipping punches to gain his opponent’s hips. If he can ground Silva, Mitchell’s top control is excellent. Silva will either end up stuck on the floor or forced to waste a ton of energy scrambling up, meaning he’ll be much less deadly when back on his feet and throwing shots.

How Silva Wins
Silva is an absurdly gifted athlete honed by perhaps the best kickboxing gym in the game right now. He shrugs off huge shots without issue and blasts durable opponents off their feet, but it’s worth-noting that his grappling really hasn’t been tested by UFC-calibre opposition yet.
It would definitely be wise for Silva to make a few adjustments here. He’s been fighting strikers and thus could afford to step in deep on his power punches. Against an opponent much more likely to shoot — and much more likely to give him problems on the ground if the takedown is successful — Silva needs to shorten his swings and make sure to stay above his own feet. Cage position becomes more important too, but fortunately Silva is already a fighter who tends to be pushing his opponents back.
Shot selection is vital in avoiding the takedown. I’d like to see Silva kicking at the inner calf and head (good open stance targets that are hard to catch), showing uppercuts, and firing straights down the middle. If he’s backing Mitchell up and making him hesitant to shoot, it’s only a matter of time before the Brazilian lines up a kill shot.

‘Lord’ Doesn’t Want A First Round KO At UFC 314
Mitchell vs. Silva Prediction
First and foremost: these odds are outrageous. Silva has never faced a grappler nearly as skilled as Mitchell. Beating up Drew Dober is an impressive accomplishment for a Featherweight, and “Lord” is clearly a gifted fighter, but there’s no evidence one way or another as to how he’ll handle a grinder like “Thug Nasty.”
Without much historical precedent to work with, I’m forced to go off vibes alone. Do I think Silva — a tremendous athlete armed with Fighting Nerds strategy — can resist the wrestling of Mitchell? Based on the rest of his team, I’m inclined to believe that camp knows a thing or two about teaching strikers how to defensively wrestle in a responsible fashion.
If he can shuck off a takedown or two, the situation grows grim for Mitchell quickly.
Prediction: Silva via knockout
