More than 700 rallies and community events are slated to take place Saturday as part of a national “day of action” protesting President Donald Trump’s policies.
The events fall under the umbrella of the “50501” movement — a decentralized campaign that began on Reddit and got its name from a Feb. 5 push for “50 protests in 50 states on 1 day.” That effort led to anti-Trump protests at state capitol buildings across the nation. Hunter Dunn, a spokesperson for 50501, described the group as a “pro-democracy, pro-Constitution, anti-executive overreach, nonviolence grassroots movement.”
The demonstrations seek to capitalize on the momentum of the April 5 “Hands Off” rallies, which drew millions across the country in the largest single-day protest of Trump’s second term. Rather than a day of protest, Saturday will be a day of action. Planned events range from food banks to community cleanups, marches to boycotts. Dunn said 50501 wanted to empower local organizers to plan events that meet their community’s needs in the face of aggressive immigration policies, economic uncertainty from sweeping tariffs and the reduction of the federal workforce.
“The goal is community impact,” Dunn said. “We’re looking for ways you can strengthen community ties, ways you can help your neighbor, ways you can build community support in the face of tough times ahead.”
In D.C., 50501 organizers will host a “fuel the movement” mutual aid campaign offering food, baby products and hygiene supplies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Franklin Park.
“Our people are under pressure,” the flier reads. “Laid off, left behind, locked out. Federal workers. Neighbors. Collective family. This isn’t new, and we’ve always had each other. Mutual aid is how we resist. Mutual aid is how we win.”
Protests are also planned near Lafayette Square and outside Vice President JD Vance’s residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory — although Vance and his family will be in Rome for an Easter weekend trip to the Vatican. A march along 15th Street NW from near the Washington Monument toward the White House focuses on demanding the return of Kilmar Abrego García, a man the government admits was wrongfully deported and who is now in a Salvadoran prison, according to 50501’s database of events.
The decentralized 50501 and Hands Off movements encapsulate a vast variety of issues, acting as a channel for anyone outraged by Trump’s expansive use of executive authority, organizers say.
In New York City, a planned protest in Bryant Park aims to center its attention on immigration and climate issues, while other demonstrators, outside a Tesla store on Long Island, look to protest the dismantling of the federal workforce under Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service.
“No one single march wins demands or ends injustice,” said Ben Zinevich, an organizer with the ANSWER Coalition who protested April 5 and plans to demonstrate Saturday. “It’s really about building a sustained movement that can show itself as a political force.”
