Netflix fans can’t get enough of Yellowstone creator’s sequel

Netflix viewers can’t seem to get enough of Yellowstone creator’s action-packed sequel, which some reckon is ‘better than the first’.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, only recently added to Netflix’s collection, has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most viewed titles on the platform. As of now, it holds the third spot in the list of most-watched movies among US subscribers.

The 2018 sequel to the original Sicario, itself released in 2015, didn’t quite match up to its predecessor’s critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 62% compared to the original’s 92%. However, Netflix enthusiasts are lapping it up.

The first film was hailed by many as one of the finest action thrillers ever made, but some fans argue that the sequel surpasses it.

Both films were crafted by Taylor Sheridan, the genius behind the hit series Yellowstone and its spin-offs, as well as Landman and Tulsa King, reports the Mirror US.

Sheridan penned these scripts before revolutionizing television, and both films continue to hold a cherished spot among movie buffs. That said, there were notable changes in front of and behind the camera for the sequel.

While Denis Villeneuve directed the first film, Stefano Sollima took the reins for the sequel. Sollima’s portfolio isn’t as diverse or extensive as Villeneuve’s, who later created Dune and Bladerunner 2099. Some critics attribute this as the reason why the sequel didn’t receive as much praise.

Emily Blunt didn’t reprise her role in the sequel, with her character’s storyline wrapped up. However, fans were thrilled to see Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin return to their roles from the first film.

Day of the Soldado follows the CIA’s mission to dismantle drug cartels operating along the US-Mexico border. The plot thickens as they conspire with a covert operative to abduct a cartel leader’s daughter, but their plan goes awry during their covert entry into Mexico.

One fan took to the internet to share their thoughts on the sequel: “This was better than the first. The story was very original and left me asking what’s gonna happen next. The only thing lacking was the translations for the Mexican scenes. But overall, the best action thriller since Sicario 1.”

Many viewers are eagerly awaiting a third instalment, which has reportedly been in the works for over five years. However, given Sheridan’s packed TV schedule, it’s understandable that a new script hasn’t been finalized yet.

A viewer expressed their love for Soldado, saying: “I loved it! It was just as good as the first, if not better. The storyline, acting and all of the twist and turns kept me highly engaged and wanting more. Please let there be a third. It’s a 10 for me!”

Another chimed in: “Fantastic sequel. Great story, great acting, good action. I’m not sure if it’s better than the first movie but it’s at least as good as it in my opinion. If you liked the first movie, then I’m sure you’ll like this.”

On the other hand, one enthusiastic fan expressed their desire for a potential next chapter, stating: “I have watched both instalments of Sicario and frankly from my perspective… this one was much much better than the first. It is richer, more serious, more plot points and simply more threatening. I know the majority vote is that the first was a masterpiece but if I have to choose one… I will choose this sequel. The acting is on point and oh how I love the ending. I pray they come back with the third edition sooner.”

Sicario: Day of the Soldado is streaming on Netflix.
