With the skies over New York having opened up today, delivering a steady and unyielding rainfall, all five boroughs are uniformly drenched. According to the National Weather Service’s detailed forecast, Manhattan, with temperatures holding around 51 degrees, and Brooklyn only slightly warmer at 52 degrees, each face northeast winds at 15 to 18 mph, gusting as high as 31 to 32 mph. This deluge is not a brief visitor, with a 100% chance of precipitation and an estimated half to three-quarters of an inch of rain expected.
As the rain continues into the evening, tapering to showers expected mainly between 8pm and 2am, Staten Island will see temperatures around 47 degrees, slightly cooler than in The Bronx, where residents can anticipate the mercury to drop to around 45 degrees. The neighborhoods in Queens are not spared, with the National Weather Service predicting rain before 4pm, and then a likelihood of rain after 5pm.
While the weekend promises a respite with mostly sunny skies projected for Sunday and high temperatures climbing to the upper 60s and low 70s by Memorial Day, today’s conditions prompt a reminder for umbrellas and raincoats. Friday’s forecast provides little comfort, indicating a 30 percent chance of showers with overcast skies, as both Queens and The Bronx expect highs near the 60s and Staten Island a bit warmer up to 63 degrees.
In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region. While today doesn’t carry specific hazards for most areas, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for areas such as Southern Queens from 2 PM to 7 PM this evening. Mariners have been warned of even more dangerous conditions at sea, with Gale Warnings issued for Long Island Sound and the bays until 6 PM this evening, indicating strong winds and rough waters.
