ForbesNYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Friday, April 4By Kris HoltWelcome to the weekend, everyone! I hope you’ve got an exciting one lined up.

I really dislike being referred to by my surname. It’s marginally better than my unwanted primary and high school nickname of “Holty” (ugh), but I dislike it all the same.

For a while, I kind of wanted to become known as a mononym. I even wanted the handle @kris on Twitter when that account was inactive. In hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t get it, because I would have become a target of people who take over high-value accounts (e.g. ones with short usernames) and sell them for profit.

So given that, and people constantly misspelling my forename with the more common variant, I do my best to address people in the same way that they introduce themselves to me. If someone’s email name is Bethany but they sign off their message with Beth, I’ll address them as Beth.

I feel terrible whenever I misspell someone’s name or refer to them in a way that doesn’t align with their preferences. Calling someone by the name they wish to be identified is the bare minimum level of respect each of us can afford another human being.

Before we begin, I’ve set up a discussion group for NYT Connections and this column on Discord. We have a great little community over there and we chat about more than NYT games. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot.

It’s also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up since I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Saturday, April 5, are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.

Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • Yellow group — employ (CONTRACT, ENGAGE, RETAIN, SIGN)
  • Green group — parts of a website (BANNER, HEADER, MENU, SIDEBAR)
  • Blue group — magazines (BILLBOARD, PEOPLE, STAR, TIME)
  • Purple group — ending with medieval weapons (CROSSWORD, GRIMACE, RAINBOW, SEMBLANCE)

I struggled a bit with this one. Nevertheless, I extended my streak to a 39th win. Here’s how I fared:

TIME, BILLBOARD and PEOPLE seemed like they would go together as a group of magazines, but nothing else I saw made sense with them.

I tried a group of BILLBOARD, SIGN, BANNER and HEADER, but there was nothing doing there. I then suspected that CROSSWORD, MENU, CONTRACT and HEADER would work together in terms of things that are printed in black and white, but I wasn’t close to a group there either.

I then went back to my original thought and added STAR to the mix to get the blues. I wasn’t familiar with STAR as a magazine, but it was the only thing that made sense.

BANNER and HEADER then called to me, and I realized that MENU and SIDEBAR are also parts of an app. Or, as the actual group revealed, a website.

The yellows then finally jumped out. I was thinking of CONTRACT as a noun rather than a verb.

That left the purples for a fairly narrow win. I did not figure out the connection there, but they made sense in hindsight. The weapons they refer to are sword (CROSSWORD), mace (GRIMACE), bow (RAINBOW) and lance (SEMBLANCE).

I have to admit, I struggled to figure out a good clue for that one. None of those constitute a “blast” per se. But other medieval weapons do involve explosions of some kind. So that was my thinking there.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Sunday’s game if you need them.

P.S. I asked my partner to suggest a good song recommendation for a Saturday. She suggested “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

As much as we’re both overthinkers and fret over certain matters, we like to hold onto the mindset that everything will be all right in the end. So, no matter what life throws your way, just remember the mantra of this song:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!
