Orioles option Strowd, tonight’s lineups and notes

Kyle Gibson is back in Baltimore and making his return start tonight with the Orioles.

Gibson was activated onto the roster this afternoon. He made 33 starts in 2023 and went 15-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 192 innings.

The Orioles optioned Kade Strowd, who was recalled yesterday and didn’t pitch, to make room for Gibson.

Gibson is 3-7 with a 5.48 ERA in 13 career starts against the Yankees. Aaron Judge is 1-for-11. Trent Grisham is 3-for-16 with a double. Cody Bellinger is 2-for-15 with two home runs.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 5-for-14 with a double, triple and homer.

The Oriole are treating the Gibson start like the first one out of spring training.

“Definitely not going to push him in an uncomfortable spot,” said manager Brandon Hyde.

A mostly right-handed lineup includes Emmanuel Rivera’s return to the Orioles. He’s playing first base.

Jorge Mateo is at second base and Dylan Carlson is in left field.

Ramón Laureano is in right field and batting fifth. He has seven hits in his last 24 at-bats.

Designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle is trying to shake a slump that’s lowered his average to .198 with one home run and a .529 OPS in 27 games. He’s hitless in his last 15 at-bats and 2-for-31 in his last 10 games.

“He just looks like a guy who’s trying way too hard,” Hyde said.

Cedric Mullins extended his on-base streak to 14 games last night dating back to April 12.

Ryan O’Hearn is hitting .310 in 34 plate appearances ending in two strikes, a contact rate of 83.3 percent, per STATS. He’s beginning tonight’s game on the bench.

Left-hander Carlos Rodón has posted a 3.50 ERA and 1.056 WHIP in six starts. He’s allowed 20 hits, walked 18 batters and struck out 45 in 36 innings.

Rodón hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last two starts over 13 innings, with six hits, six walks and 17 strikeouts. His ground ball percentage has increased from 34.0 in 2024 to 48.7.

Rodón is 0-3 with a 5.58 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in seven career games (six starts) against the Orioles. Mateo is 3-for-3 with a home run. Mountcastle is 3-for-5 with a home run. Laureano is 2-for-4 with two doubles.
