Osimhen surpasses Odegbami’s Eagles’ goal record

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has surpassed legendary striker Segun Odegbami on Nigeria’s all-time goal scorers after netting his 24th goal for the country during Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying game against Rwanda on Friday.

The Galatasaray striker was at the end of a lofty free kick from Ademola Lookman, turning the ball home with a perfect touch at the far post for Nigeria’s lead in the game.

With the goal, Osimhen moved to the second spot in Nigeria’s chart, and he is now chasing the late Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals.

Osimhen, who is playing his first game of the 2026 World Cup qualifying series scored his 24th goal in his 39th appearance for Nigeria.

He had equalled Odegbami’s record last November during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic in a 2025 AFCON qualifying game.

This season, the 26-year-old has been in great shape, with 20 goals and four assists in 20 Super Lig games for league leaders Galatasaray.

He also has 26 goals and five assists in 30 games across all competitions.
