EASTERN PA — A pair of storms could bring several days of rain and inclement weather to the greater Philadelphia area over the coming week, according to forecasters.
The first storm will hit the area Thursday night and linger until Saturday. It will be followed up by a second storm on Sunday that will go on through Wednesday of next week, the National Weather Service said.
In the Philly area, showers will mainly be isolated and scattered, with a low chance of thunderstorms, from Thursday night into early Saturday. Temperatures will remain warm.
While forecasters caution that the track of the storms is still developing, it appears the heaviest rain could hit eastern Pennsylvania with the end of the first storm on Saturday night. Up to a quarter inch of rain is likely, with more possible where the storms hit the hardest.
Flooding is possible, and there could be significant impacts on travel as the second storm wears on into next week and streams and rivers swell with the accumulated rainfall.
“The slow progression of this storm and front will hold back most of the showers and thunderstorms from reaching much of the Interstate 95 corridor into Saturday morning,” Accuweather says. “However, during the afternoon and night, some of this activity will grind toward the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts. Some of the storms may be severe during this time from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston.”
The National Weather Service’s Mt. Holly, New Jersey branch called the coming an “unsettled period.” It’s likely there will be breaks between bouts of storms for several days.
“Several rounds of showers and a few storms can be expected, even into early next week,” the National Weather Service said. “Exact details and timing remain a bit unclear at the moment, but some severe thunderstorms and/or flash flooding could be possible during this period.”
Accuweather believes the storms will ameliorate drought conditions where they’ve been pervasive in parts of the Philadelphia region, and will likely end wildfire risk for the remainder of the spring.
