The Patriots are moving on from one of the team’s biggest leaders and most accomplished players.
According to sources, the Patriots are cutting longtime center, captain, and two-time Super Bowl champion David Andrews. The 33-year-old has spent his entire 10-year career in New England. He missed most of last season due to a torn rotator cuff.
The move comes as somewhat of a surprise. A source told MassLive, however, that there were concerns with his recent injury.
After this past season ended, Andrews said he wanted to keep playing but noted it was possible the team would move in a different direction.
“I know this is a tough business. The organization might come to me and tell me it’s time to move on,” Andrews said on Jan. 6. “I might get into OTAs and training camp and know I can’t do it. If the organization decides to go in a different way, that’s their choice. I hope that’s not the case. I want to play football. I’ve done this for a long 26 years. I’d like to make it to 27 and see where it goes from there. I’m just taking it day by day. That’s all I can do. I’ve got a long road. Been through it before so I know what it’s going to take, and I’m going to try to do it.”
An eight-time captain, Andrews started 121-of-124 games in New England. Now, center becomes another position of need as the Patriots open free agency on Monday looking to completely revamp their offensive line.
Andrews came to New England as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He developed into one of the best-undrafted rookies in team history. After starting 11 games in 2015, Andrews replaced Bryan Stork as Tom Brady’s center. He was part of two Super Bowl championships – 2016 and 2018. Andrews started every game played after his rookie season.
Andrews was also one of the Patriots bigger leaders. He was named captain eight times between 2017-2024. Andrews was also named to the Patriots 2010s All-Decade Team at center.
The center did deal with some injuries. He missed the entire 2019 season after blood clots were discovered in his lungs. Last year, after four games, Andrews suffered a torn rotator cuff. That injury required surgery and ended his season.
The Patriots cycled through centers last season. After Nick Leverett started one game, Ben Brown started 10 games at center. Left guard Cole Strange transitioned to the center position and started two games. The team also has centers Jake Andrews and Lecitus Smith on the roster
It would be a surprise if the Patriots didn’t look to add another center in free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft. Among the free agents still available are Coleman Shelton and Josh Myers.
