Phil Parkinson sends message to Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer by highlighting conduct of a former Wrexham ‘stalwart’

Wrexham face Wycombe Wanderers in their next fixture as they look to rebuild momentum in their promotion push following defeat to Reading.

Having kept three clean sheets in a row, Wrexham would have been devastated with their poor showing in the 2-0 defeat to Reading and the impact it could have on their League One promotion hopes.

The Red Dragons head to Adams Park level on points with Wycombe and knowing that another defeat could spell trouble for their hopes of playing Championship football next season.

Phil Parkinson has a number of injury concerns ahead of the game and the Wrexham squad will need to ready to be called upon if the likes of George Dobson and Ryan Barnett are unable to recover from knocks.

Parkinson has explained the importance of his squad many times this season amid hectic fixture schedules and is going to need that depth against Wycombe Wanderers.

Notable absentees from matchday squads recently have been strike duo Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer with Iwan Roberts believing Mullin and Parkinson have fallen out.

However as per BBC Sport Wales, Parkinson has reminded the current squad of their importance and how one former player conducted himself during recent promotion successes.

Parkinson stated: “Whether you play for two minutes, 92 minutes or don’t make the squad – everybody’s got a part to play in terms of the way they train every day and the way they conduct themselves around the training ground.

“A couple of years ago I remember closing in on the National League title and Luke Young found himself out of the team – a stalwart of the team.

“Youngy’s a great example because as much as he found himself suddenly out of the team he conducted himself brilliantly and played his part – as he did last year. That’s just the nature of a football squad in the course of a season.”

Luke Young was an integral part of Wrexham’s successive promotions from the National League into League One and was Rob McElhenney’s favourite player.

The 32-year-old midfielder made 246 appearances for the Red Dragons and scored 22 goals during his time at the Racecourse Ground before being released in the summer of 2024.

Young joined Cheltenham Town from Wrexham and has continued to show his fine ability on the pitch both as a midfield general and as a leader.

Leadership and character will be needed in abundance from Parkinson’s current team in their bid to pip Wycombe to second place and Young certainly had both ingredients during his time in North Wales.
