Peel Regional Police say a man was shot and injured by an officer at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Thursday, leading to a chaotic scene at Terminal 1.
Toronto Paramedics told CityNews that first responders arrived at the airport at 7 a.m. on Thursday.
Peel Regional Police later confirmed that an adult man was shot and injured by a responding officer. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified. The man’s current condition is unknown.
A police spokesperson said the officer was uninjured. Authorities noted that this was an isolated incident and that there were no known threats to public safety.
Tipsters who called into the 680 NewsRadio newsroom reported that several police cruisers were observed at the scene. They cited a heavy police presence at Terminal 1, with cars backed up along the road leading to the terminal.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said Highway 409 to Terminal 1 (departures) is closed due to the ongoing investigation.
A spokesperson with Toronto Pearson said passengers and vehicles were being rerouted to enter and exit through Terminal 1 arrivals.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that probes incidents where people died or were seriously injured. Investigators also review incidents where sexual assault has been alleged or a firearm was discharged at a person.
Due to a Peel Police investigation outside Terminal 1 departures, passengers and vehicles are being rerouted to enter and exit through T1 arrivals.
We will provide updates throughout the morning.

Police let us exit cars and walk to the terminal now. Cars were still held. I think I saw over 30 police vehicles. Hearing one person confidently say what happened but who knows. #pearson pic.twitter.com/UiFzpuXNV6
