The Rangers are in desperate need of two points and as Jonny Lazarus explains, they are in a great spot to pick them up vs. the Devils.

There is no doubt about it, this is a must-win game for the New York Rangers, who find themselves two points out of the playoffs. The New Jersey Devils have won two straight games, in a home-and-home against the Minnesota Wild, but this afternoon both of these teams are looking to extend their respective win streaks to three games.

My Rangers vs. Devils predictions and NHL picks explain why I favor the visitors in this Metro Division clash on April 5.

Rangers vs Devils prediction

My best bet: Rangers moneyline (+102 at FanDuel)

My analysis

The last time these two teams met was on January 9th at Madison Square Garden, where Sam Carrick was the overtime hero in a 3-2 overtime win for the New York Rangers. Today, this game is as important as it gets for the road team. The Montreal Canadiens have taken control over the second wild card spot and could potentially run away with it if the Rangers don’t keep up.

Over the past few weeks, Artemi Panarin has caught fire and is carrying the team offensively with six goals and seven assists in his last nine games. Panarin hasn’t been doing it alone, he’s gotten some help from Vincent Trocheck and J.T. Miller, who have each notched nine points in their last nine games.

As a team, the Rangers have been outproducing the New Jersey Devils over the past couple of weeks. In their last nine games, the Rangers are tallying 3.33 goals per game, but their power play has been dreadful, clicking at just a 4.4% rate, which is incredibly alarming.

The Devils however, are only scoring 2.78 goals per game in their last nine, but their power play has been much better than the Rangers at a 31.8% clip.

Jacob Markstrom should be in goal for New Jersey, but his numbers haven’t been all that pretty as of late. He is 3-2-1 in his last six starts while skating to a .872 save percentage with a 3.28 goals-against average. Igor Shesterkin is likely to start for the Rangers, and in his last 10 games, he has a +6.8 goals saved above expected while skating to a .902 save percentage and a 2.93 goals against average.

It won’t be easy for the Rangers, but hopefully, they can find a way.

Rangers vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)

Rangers moneylineArtemi Panarin 1+ point

J.T. Miller 1+ points

Artemi Panarin has been red hot lately, riding a three-game point streak with three goals and seven assists in that span. He had seven shots on goal in the team’s most recent game and should stay just as aggressive in today’s contest against the Devils. The Rangers offense runs through him, they need him to take this game over.

J.T. Miller is riding a five-game point streak of his own and he has just been put on the Rangers top power play unit to help them get out of their slump. In those five games, he has three goals and five assists. Miller has been an offensive machine since joining the Rangers back in January and has come up big in the moments they need him.
