BOSTON — Saturday’s Red Sox-Cardinals game won’t start on time due to rain. It’s officially delayed past the anticipated 4:10 p.m. start time.
Officials plan to meet around 5:45 p.m. ET to determine the next steps.
“Attention fans,” a video board message reads. “The start of the game will be delayed due to weather in the area. Further updates will be provided when available. Thank you for your patience.”
It’s unclear when — or if — things will get underway. The tarp remains on the field at Fenway. The National Weather Service calls for rain throughout the afternoon in Boston.
“Rain and possibly a thunderstorm,” reads the NWS forecast. “High near 46. Southeast wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.”
Manager Alex Cora said earlier in the afternoon that he expects the teams to play. If not, Boston and St. Louis will likely play a day-night doubleheader Sunday. For now, the series finale is scheduled to be the Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN at 7:10 p.m.
If the teams do play Saturday, it’ll be righty Richard Fitts starting for the Red Sox and righty Andre Pallante pitching for St. Louis. Boston won the series opener, 13-9, on Friday.
