Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has maintained his record of doing well for Rajasthan Royals in the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Sunday (March 23) as well and hammered a brilliant half-century against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the match played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Samson, who is not leading RR in the first three matches of IPL 2025, came out to open the innings for Men in Pink in the 287-run chase after replacing Fazalhaq Farooqi as an impact player and crossed the 50-run mark in 26 balls.

He overall scored 66 runs from 37 balls and, during his stay at the crease, hammered 7 fours and 4 sixes. Samson added 111 runs for the fourth wicket with Dhruv Jurel (70 runs from 35 balls) but failed to help RR chase down the target of 287 runs in 20 overs.

Samson’s record in 1st match

In the first match of the IPL 2020 season for RR, Samson scored 74 runs from 32 balls against Chennai Super Kings at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on September 22, 2020. In 2021 he scored 119 runs from 63 balls against Punjab Kings at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 12, 2021. In RR’s first match of IPL 2022, Samson slammed 55 runs from 27 balls against SRH at MCA Stadium in Pune on March 29, 2022.

  • 2020: 74 from 32 balls vs CSK in Sharjah
  • 2021: 119 from 62 balls vs PBKS in Mumbai
  • 2022: 55 from 27 balls vs SRH in Pune

In the 2023 season, RR opened the campaign against SRH at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 2, 2023, and Samson scored 55 runs from 32 balls. In RR’s first match of IPL 2024, Samson scored 83 not out from 52 balls against Lucknow Super Giants at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on March 24, 2024.

SRH won by 44 runs

In the second match of IPL 2025 on Sunday, SRH secured a win by 44 runs over Rajasthan Royals. SRH, after being invited to bat first by RR skipper Riyan Parag, rode on Ishan Kishan’s maiden IPL century to post a total of 286 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. The 26-year-old left-handed batter, after coming out to bat at No. 3, faced 47 balls, and with the help of 11 fours and 6 sixes, scored 106 runs.

Apart from him, Travis Head scored 67 runs from 31 balls, and Heinrich Klaasen contributed 34 runs from 14 balls.

For RR, Tushar Deshpande finished with figures of 3 for 44 in four overs, and two SRH batters were sent back to the pavilion by Maheesh Theekshana.
