Saw XI has reportedly been cancelled, with production on the horror sequel having halted over a year ago, according to a new update about the movie. Saw XI was confirmed not long after Saw X was released, the tenth installment of the gore-splattered horror franchise which earned critical and commercial success. The sequel was originally scheduled for release on September 27, 2024, before being pushed back an entire year to September 26, 2025. Since then, there’s been no news on what to expect from the eleventh movie in the series.
Now, according to Bloody Disgusting, Saw XI has quietly been cancelled, with a source revealing production hasn’t been moving forward for “[a]lmost a year now.” The report claims infighting among producers stalled production in January 2024, with one trying to “plow forward” on the movie while another tried halting its progress. Lionsgate didn’t have anyone to step in and negotiate a path forward, effectively leading to the sequel’s cancellation. This, in turn, means the franchise has also ended with Saw X. However, the report noted if more movies are made, they’ll likely “start over.“
What Saw XI’s Cancellation Means For The Franchise
The Movies Are Effectively Over
The post-credits scene from Saw X promised a continuation of the story with more familiar faces, as Tobin Bell’s John Kramer is joined by Costas Mandylor’s Mark Hoffman. While it wasn’t clear if Saw XI would be a direct continuation, the movie was expected to see Bell reprise his role, alongside Mandylor and Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young. Director Kevin Greutert was also set to return, while Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who co-wrote the movies from Saw IV to Saw 3D, would be stepping in instead of Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg.
RelatedJohn Kramer’s return to the franchise in Saw X is nearly perfect, but it could have been ruined had things happened differently two years later.
The report doesn’t specify what behind-the-scenes conflicts influenced the movie’s cancellation. However, it does mean the franchise is effectively over unless the project is revived in some new form in the future. The report claiming they’ll “start over” if the horror series were to continue could mean anything from a complete reimagining of what the movie would be like, to a reboot. Since the Saw movies are iconic for their interconnected storyline and elaborate traps, it would make sense for Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures to want the series to continue in some form.
Our Take On Saw XI Getting Cancelled
A Disappointing End To A Promising Continuation
It seemed the tenth movie in the series was going to bring the horror franchise back from the grave, with positive reviews and strong box office numbers showing it was ripe to continue. This makes Saw XI‘s cancellation all the more bitter, given the movie’s ample opportunity to continue the series while maintaining its new high bar of quality. But, with the film having stalled in production over a year ago, it seems the franchise is officially on pause until Twisted Pictures decides what direction they want to move in next.
